Hey RMM, did you get my PM from last week?RMM wrote:Okay. Sorry if I took offense. You obviously know much more about it than I do and you make some very good points. There is always a better way to do things, but sometimes the increase in quality is simply not worth the effort. Evidently when it comes to MP3 versus WAV, it is.
I only got into this when I was told about Replay Radio as a way to record financial radio programs, where quality obviously isn't a concern. I tried to record using it with WAV files, but had continual problems. Replay Radio then went to RM and set it up so I could record using MP3, which seemed to work great. Because they are live recordings, I figured it was good enough and I couldn't tell a difference.
I had heard complaints about MP3, but didn't know that compressing was that detrimental to the sound. Also, I'm 52 and definitely losing my hearing, so I probably can't hear the range of sound you can (too many loud rock concerts, motorcycles and fast cars in my misspent youth - I don't regret a minute of it, though.). So, I was thrilled with the quality I thought I was getting. Most people seem to be happy just to get a copy of the concert. I'm also old enough to be happy with digital TV and don't understand the obsession (and cost) of HDTV. Yes, it's great, but is it THAT much better? I don't think so, but my son disagrees with me. So, I guess it depends on your perspective and point of reference.
I have only been recording concerts since May, so you are obviously much more qualified to comment and I bow to your experience. I never did the Napster thing. I am just a Parrothead who was thrilled to find out I could get copies of concerts I attended. Then I got into recording and editing them for others who didn't even know how to do that. I have a number of people who wanted CD's, so I figured it would be better to offer concerts for download. I simply don't have time to be mailing CD's out to everybody who wants one, much as I would like to. I want to limit it to people who can't get/make their own CD's
I will look into Total Recorder, but it had better be pretty easy to use (what I like about Replay Radio). I don't know how much space Grags has to offer even if I did want to use WAV rather than MP3 and I am not technically knowledgable enough to try to run a FTP site myself (nor do I want to currently). Also, I've already paid $30 for Replay Radio, granted not a significant amount of money.
Do you know of a good editor to use with WAV files? I use MP3 Magic (offered by Replay Radio). I don't know if it would work with WAV files. It works very well with MP3.
So, thanks for a very good reply to my posting. If we can offer a better quality recording to fellow members, great. Can you assist? I don't have the time right now to re-learn how to do this.
