jimmy was quoted as saying that he typically made about a buck off of each CD sold. using his on label (mailboat records) he now makes about 4 to 5 bucks off of each CD.

I think this statement is one of the best common sense responses I have read in regards to this issue (no offense whatsoever to Lee, whose expertise on such matters never fails to impress me).

Having your own label has many advantages, and being the smart business man he is, I’m sure Jimmy knew that.

Yeah - he gets the label share of the profit now too... plus Mailboat doesn't do any real promo so he's saving the money that would be spent on advertising, video, paying radio promoters etc. That makes it a LOT easier to save $$.

Meisinger - do you know if Mailboat does co-ops?

Could JB still release LPs?

Post by Parrot Monkey »

For a nice retro touch, Jimmy could most likely release his Mailboat albums on vinyl if he wanted to. I’m sure its something MCA denied and considered a silly expense after the 80’s were over and the LP format was dead. Than again, it would be quite costly for something so few would buy, as the recent albums have a running time optimized for CD and would have to be double LPs.

If you search on Tower Records and eBay, you would be surprised how many artists still release albums on vinyl.

A CD Is Still An LP

Post by JustDucky »

I love reading things that are wrong. Like when people say He's got a new CD out. That is correct in one aspect, but in the recording world, a CD is still an LP. LP stands for Long Player. An LP is also an album - a collection of songs/tracks. A CD is an album as it is a record - vinyl records are just that - vinyl - as it is an LP. Even a cassette release is considered an LP, record or album. It's the type of medium that is different (78, 45, 33-1/3 - all of which are phonographs, 8-track, cassette, CD - even a DVD with just music on it) not what it is. Calaloo is an EP.

Last count - and this is not counting live albums or compilations - LTC is Jimmy's 26th album. I don't know how many Mailboat live albums in the Twenty Hundreds there are now but if you include T,T,S, the previous two live albums and the compialtions that Jimmy has a hand in (I know he had nothing to do with Down To Earth and HCJubilee being released but they do count now whereas Pirates Treasure and all of those other ones, American Storyteller and all that crap, they don't count) Jimmy has released a grand total of 33 releases (that's not counting MMIM as a double, just as one release). Now count the doubles and one quadruple (YHTBT, BBBB, BTB and MMIM) you get, let's see, 39 I believe. If you include Calaloo it's 40. Plus whatever Mailboat live albums there are. Think he'll make a total of 50 releases before the end of the year with more live albums?

Oh yeah, I didn't include Before The Salt - the double compilation. So that would be 42 - 41 releases, 42 if you count the amount of albums.

That's A LOT of useless information innit? Does anyone care? Does it really matter? NO! It's funny though. Makes you realise what all he's really done (and what MCA hasn't done as far as making those albums look and sound great) and how Jimmy always gets it wrong when he says how many albums he's released - read the liner notes to WIJMerchant or APLA50. One of those books says he's released 30 some albums or something.

How many box sets have been sold? One box set is counted as 4 CDs ie 10 sold counts as 40 units moved. One sale of You Had To Be There is counted as 2 - 10 for 20 units, etc...

I listened to LTC again and it gets better each time. I like it a lot and I think it's a great RECORD!

HEY! I didn't feel like waiting to go in to New Orleans and get it at Tower or Virgin or Margaritaville. And I wasn't about to drive all over 'God's Country' to go to Best Buy. I don't care where I get any CD, actually, as long as I get what I want. There are no ma and pa places anymore. Not here. It's Big Stores or nothin'.[/quote]

I'm just joking. I don't like big chains like that but I guess I'm as guilty as the next guy.

In your case it's necessity. In mine, it's laziness.

I'd rather buy it from a small mom and pop place like Bert's in Newark Delaware or Charlemaigne on Birminham's South Side (is that place even there anymore? I haven't lived there in twenty years...come to think of, I wonder if Burly Earl is still there.) but that's not always possible.
