My wife, my little keet and I were listening to the CD in the car yesterday and my wife said that she liked the version of HGL Jimmy did live was better that the version on the CD. I think that it did sound a little better without all the other people singing on it. Which brings me to my thought. Do you really think that all these guest stars were needed on this album or would the songs be just as good if Jimmy and the band did them. I really like the duets with Alan and Toby but I think the rest would be just as good if not better without everybody else. Any other thoughts?

The duets are nice for a change... but not needed.

Which brings the question... Did Jimmy do the duets because he thought it would be fun? To get some inspiration from some different sources? To help bring in the country fans? OR to just make a ringer CD that will crossover and chart well because of the mega country star power that appears on the disc?

I think I would've liked all of the duets better with just band members, but I'm also not a country music fan- so it's not like some of my favorite artists have teamed up with my very favorite or something.

I think I came to that conclusion just by noticing that most of the tunes I find myself want to listen to most (Coast of Carolina, Anytime...., Coastal Confessions, Back to the Island) are the ones without "duet partners".

That said, I also really like Boats to Build and even License to Chill is kinda fun but I think that is because Jimmy seems to have some musical chemistry with Jackson and Chesney. It just seems a little unnatural to hear Jimmy sharing verses with anyone other than Mac, but if all involved had fun doing it then more power to 'em.

I loved your question, because it gives me a chance to post this email from Verlon Thompson, co-writer of Boats To Build...

Hey Friends,
Verlon here.

Today, July 13th, marks the release of the new Jimmy Buffett cd titled
"License to Chill."

Why am I promoting Jimmy Buffett you ask?

Because the second track on the cd, a duet with Alan Jackson, is "Boats
To Build", a Verlon Thompson/Guy Clark original.

So, yes I'm proud.....but I also make a few pennies each time a copy is
sold...which will help support my traveling troubadour habit.

Thanks to all of you I'm still doing what I love and loving what I
do.....

Now, don't get me wrong, I love this album, but is it just me that thinks it is kind of weird listen to Jimmy sing sad songs?

Like fine wine, the cds have to age. BHOTM is getting better every year, same with FSOTW. In a couple of years, I will have warmed up to LTC.

I'll tell you how this duets cd began. This all started with Freddy vs. Jason. Now we're getting Alien vs. Predator, Batman vs. Superman (maybe down the road), and Buffett's duets cd. Next year, hitting theaters will be Jimmy Buffett vs. Ozzy Osbourne: Apocalypso.

In seriousness, I think that working with other artists is something that many musicians love doing, and Buffett said "screw it, it's my turn." It's certainly not his first time, as he's already done duets with AJ (Margaritaville, 5 O'Clock) and Sinatra (Mac the Knife). Heck, one of the Neville brothers even showed up on Middle of the Night, though I still don't understand why.

Surely the popularity of 5 O'Clock gave him the green light to do this album, but I bet it's something that's been on the burner for a long time. Sinatra did a couple duet cds, BB King did a great one (Deuces Wild), why not Jimmy?

Every legendary artist should have a live cd, a greatest hits, a box set, and a duets cd. Next we need Jimmy Buffett action figures.

I barely remember a Brian Wilson & Buffett duet.

Jimmy answers the majority of all the license to chill questions in Simply Complicated. "Am I country Pop or rock n roll it all may be related" Jimmy makes his own style whatever he is feeling and we buy it and like it score settled.
