If your interested in the behind the scenes of the tech side of the industry pick up "Mix". "Mix" is a great trade mag that provides insight into studio and tour equipement. Browse through it at a Borders or a Barnes and Noble. I like it so much I subscribed.
Lee, good explaination! Is the back channel mic on JB's ear piece itself?

Lee is berry berry smart man.
All I can add was something I heard from Bela Fleck once at a banjo workshop at a bluegrass festival in Pagosa Springs Colorado.
For acoustic instruments, having loud monitor speakers blaring back at you can impact the sound of the instrument, even sometimes possibly turning into a bit of a feedback situation. Bela went with the IEM's [how cool, knowing the lingo] in order to improve the sound of his banjer.
As an aside, I always liked having monitors when attending shows in small venues, as I would try to get like within 10 feet of the stage. That way my eardrums weren't nuked by the stacks, but the sound was still awesome thanks, in part, to the monitors...
