I'm not familiar with her work. But I love her voice on "Someone I Used To Love" From reading "Pirate looks at 50" I know she recorded "In the Distance" before Bette did. What would be the best Nanci Griffith CD to buy for a neophyte?

I think the best introduction to her work is the two-disc Complete MCA Recordings that came out last year. It highlights her most acclaimed songs.

There's also a single disc best of collection available..

If you want to move on from there, she has several excellent studio albums.. one of my personal favorites is Storms.

Any CD with the song "Little Love Affairs" on it. I cry like a baby every time I hear it. It's also on a Chieftains CD.

I love all of Nanci's work..But if I had to pick one, it would be "Late Night Grande Hotel"...Just incredible. Or....."Dust Bowl Symphony" which is a compilation of old and new songs..with other artists featured. She does an old Buddy Holly song with the original Cricketts with her..Darius Rucker sings on one also....She recorded it with the London Philharmonic Symphony...
Enjoy!

I'm going to have to keep listening to this tune, right now it is dead last on my play list right up there with Hokey and Math. I'll try again.

I heard someone say her voice irritated them on that song to where they wanted to poke her or their eye out... :D
Iris Dement did that to me on some of her recordings with John Prine..

Seriously..The first time I heard the song Late Night Grande Hotel, I was hooked...

The best way to judge an artist, especially an artist you've never heard before is to hear what they sound like live.

Try "One Fair Summer Evening".

I know plenty of people that are turned off by Nanci's "little girl voice" but it's never really bothered me. I think some of her newer material is spotty at best but I second the recommendation of One Fair Summer Evening but I think my overall favorite of hers would be Other Voices, Other Rooms an album full of some of her favorite songs by other artists. I'm also fond of Flyer.

Thank you! Those are my other two favorites of hers...and I agree about the newer material...Flyer is one that is in my car all the time....

If you really want to get to "know Nanci"...I think it is best to buy her VHS of One Fair Summer Evening or Other Voices Other Rooms.

Other Voices Other Rooms was filmed in Austin and at the Paramount Theater and it is excellent.

You get a little of everybody with Nanci that way.

Think I'll go watch One Fair Summer Evening now.

I would still love to hear Nanci and Jimmy do Gulf Coast Highway.

Nanci also has a DVD called Winter Marquee.

I saw her open for Jackson Browne a few weeks ago. Before she began playing Gulf Coast Highway she said that's she's had the opportunity to sing this song with some great singers including Mac and Jimmy.
