I have been to Key West several times and it does not confuse me at all. In my opion from the stories that I have been told and the stories I have read there is an original Sloppy Joe's(Captain Tony's) and the newer Sloppy Joe's. There has to be some way to settle this than the same old let's sue. Maybe if you have never been to Key West or never heard the stories you might get confused. This is stupid IMO.

There was also an article in The Boston Herald about it.

This is a small pic of the outside sign at Capt. Tony's that reads "the first and original Sloppy Joe's". As for the comment from the representative at Sloppy Joe's about their products being better.........I bought a shirt from each one a couple of weeks ago, and the Capt. Tony's shirt is of much better quality, honestly. From what I could see from being there, Sloppy Joe's is much more commercialized and draws alot more tourists and a daytime lunch crowd, but I would love to be at Capt. Tony's at night.

Bob, you are correct. I went to Sloppy Joe's and it was more commercialized than Captain Tony's. I left there and went to Captain Tony's and ended up stopping there 3 times the whole week I was there. Captain Tony's was more like a local neighborhood bar were you could have a good time and get to know everybody at the bar and the bartender.Bob Roberts wrote:

The Captain is always right.
Was down at Capt. Tony's just a few months back and had a chance to chat with him. From what he said he might be at Margaritaville in Orlando this August which will be a real treat. If you ever get a chance to meet him don't think twice for if his life story is half of what he says it is it will be an honor to say you know the man. I spent every night hanging there and it is a treat. Just don't get drunk and try to find the restroom.

I was just in Key West a month ago, and I must say the sign a Capt. Tony’s about it being the original Sloppy Joe’s had me a little confused, but I soon got it. It’s weird, I did think for a second about how this happened and if there was any rivalry between the two. Sure enough, there is.
This is sure a ridiculous case. Hemingway’s watering hole was at what is now Capt. Tony’s, when it was under the Sloppy Joe’s name in the 30’s. I agree with what is said in the article, both places have the right to claim it was his watering hole and display memorabilia, but it might be a good I idea to have something on the wall in both places explaining the situation.
The Capt.’s got it right. They don’t care about where Hemingway drank, it’s all about the $. They think just because one place was the watering hole it’s going to get more customers? It seemed to me that both places are doing just fine and don’t really need such boost. And besides, one place is a restaurant, and the other is solely a bar. Why the need for rivalry?

Capt. Tony is right - it's all about the money. But what is kinda funny is that years ago on my first trip to KW I took a tour of Hemingway's house and the guide told the same story - that where Capt. Tony's was the original SJ's. And if I am not mistaken, the Conch Train guide said the same thing. But it is all about money. And the last few times I have been down there I have spent most of my time at Capt. Tony's anyway, SJ's just got to where it wasn't enjoyable with all the freakin' cruise people and tourists, (yeah I know, I am a tourist too - but my buddies and I blend in - we always get asked if we are locals), but anyway, we would get up, head to Pepe's around 7 or 8am for breakfast, then head to Tony's to shoot pool all day. Tony showed up one night and I was able to talk with him for a little while - he is such a cool man...
But I have already decided - after all this I won't be back in SJ's anymore...

There is no reason for this to be an issue! Capt Tony's doesn't claim to be what Sloppy's is...................just what it was......, before the days when a bar was a "retail format"!
I have spent many nights in Key West and at both Capt. Tony's and Sloppy Joe's, and never once did I confuse the two (OK there was that one night, but I also "confused" the beach with my bed....LONG STORY!)
As Parrotheads we should support the Capt. in any way we can, after all he's a friend of Jimmy.
One last note, in my last 3 trips down I have been fourtunate enough to spend some time with Capt Tony himself, he is one hell of a character, and a hit with the ladies!
