But then they add an r to words like "idear."

And I left Florida and moved further north to get back to the South. The further south you are in Florida the closer you get to Newark. :P
thats so true...to both the adding r's and the further south the more north you are....luckily for me I grew up in Lauderdale, but spent enough time in north Florida to still feel like a Southerner

Lessee..... I've spent 22 yee-ahs in the Nawth, and 19 yee-ahs in the South, and the bettah paht of 4 yee-ahs globe trotting for Uncle Sam. So....

I drop my R's in some places and add them in others (okay, so I grew up in Eastern Massachusetts....)

I say y'all all the time, and my G's have disappeared.

I have hated Yankees since I was old enough to understand the word. It was so nice to learn that in my newly adopted Southern home, they hated those baseball players from da Bronx just as much as I did. They even called 'em DAMNED Yankees... 8)

I'll say one thing about the South. There are MANNERS in the south. Where I grew up, we were taught manners, and kids called adults by their last name (Mr. Smith, Mrs. Jones), but if you said Sir or Ma'am, it meant you were being a smart-mouth, and you were liable to get a good whuppin'... er... spanking... The South is far more genteel than the Nawth.

In general, Southerners are friendlier. Nawtherners can be fiercely loyal friends, but they take way more time to warm up to you. The first week in my new house in rural Virginia, I met a new friend in line at the veterinarian, and an hour later we were drinking sweet tea on her porch and watching our kids play together in her yard. However, neighbors here in the Nawth who I don't even know delivered food to my house when I came back from deployment to the FSOTW.

Hot cereal sorta things are meant to be eaten with maple syrup and milk. That's just how it is. Neverthless, I also like my grits with butter and pepper, sometimes with a fried egg all cut up and mixed in. :D

I LOVE Southern bah-b-que and sweet tea!!!! Thank God for Becky's Bar-B-Que, in Newport, RI. Best barbeque I've ever tasted, and I used to live within smellin' distance of the Smithfield Ham packing houses. However, Becky (God rest her soul, she just died at 40-something from breast cancer  ) was from Nawth Ca-lina. :D

The Nawth has better fall foliage.... the South's azaleas make for a gorgeous spring...

Nawth, South.... each has it's charms... When in Rome..... if you're a Yankee in the South, throttle back and adjust, or realize that things won't always get done as fast as you think they should..... if you're a Southerner in the Nawth, either pick up the pace, or just realize that things move a little quicker up here and you might be a step behind, which is okay, too... :D :D :D

I've enjoyed living in both places!! :D :D

(funny note on accents..... picture these three as college roommates, each with a *strong* accent: Boston, MA; Yonkers, NY; and Jonesboro, TN..... it literally took two days for the three of us just to be able to understand each other! :o :o   )

BTW -- According to Aquaholics thinking what does it make me if I was born in Bama but raised in Central Florida???? Do I get a banjo or some steel drums???? :o

Maybe that's why he talks about his gulf coastal mouth?

BTW, Alabama was part of the original purchase in 1783. Mobile and Pascagoula came along in 1803 with the Louisana Purchase.

Jonesborough! Tennessee's oldest town! I'm from about 20 minutes away, so now you've got an idea of my accent.

the first day, she ran in the room and demanded, "I need a pin!"

"A pin?" I asked, confused. "What for?"

Dont foget as well ... in the South you have to refer to a store in plural form
It's not Kroger... it's Kroger's

or you have to add the word THE to the title
It's not simply "I'm going to Publix."
It's "I'm going to THE Publix."

As far as previous references to the confederate flags
Myself personally --- It's always irritated me... the whole "South's gonna rise again" mentality that some round here HONESTLY take seriously

That's what the South was trying to do; exercise their States' Rights. Unfortunately, someone up north decided not to let that happen.
