I Feel Blue in the Bathtub

...and my problem is, my bathroom is BLUE!! Sheesh. What did you think I was talking about?
Anyway, does anyone in the whole wide world of BN have experience remodeling bathrooms? My bathroom is soooooo ugly. Has blue walls, blue linoleum, blue tub, blue potty, blue sink...and dark 70's vanity.
Replacing the sink, vanity, and potty will be easy. Throw up some new paint and and a tile floor and we're most of the way done.
But.....................this BLUE tub. I'm talkin' blue blue blue blue blue blue. How does one successfully replace a bathtub? How hard is it to take out an old tub and put in a new one. Ever tried any of those refinishing jobs that just put stuff over the existing tub?
Is this a do-it-yourself kind of thing (hubby is pretty handy and has many, many power tools)...or should we just pay someone to eliminate the blue-ness?
Thank you in advance for all of your kind help!

A lot of companies make acrylic bathtub liners that look beautiful, but I don't know if they'll sell just the liner, or if they have to install it too. That would be easier than replacing the tub. Or you can have it refinished, but a professional would have to do that if you want it to last for more than a year or two.
I don't know how hard it is to take out a tub- I'm going to guess it's one of the hardest things to do, since you usually put the studs, then tub, then walls in.

Amen to that. I have an interior design degree, and I think I threw up a little in my mouth when I read your post. I'm getting caught up in the minute details like, "WHAT THE HELL WAS THE PERSON THINKING WHO INSTALLED THIS IN THE FIRST PLACE?" and "How long have you been living like this?" Anyway, I'd be careful with the prefab units you can put over the existing tub. If you're going to spend the money, do it right. You can do it yourself if your husband is REALLY handy. And strong.

Thank you for your help! I don't know
what they were thinking other than the house was built in 1971 and I think blue bathrooms were cool then. We've been living like this since March. This bathroom is just ICKY.
By doing it ourselves, do you mean replace the bathtub ourselves? Hubby is very handy and strong (and has strong friends).
Thanks again!

Most of the house is Pepto Pink. The blue really stands out.

Sounds like you have a whoooole lotta work to do.. Personally, I would keep the bathroom, and work outward to reduce the Pepto pink to an acceptable level (read: none)

I forgot my name is Blue Dynamo and here I'm bashing the color...

Anyway, it would be difficult to remove the entire bathtub (like Coconuts mentioned), but it's not impossible. It'd be a good stress reliever, that's for sure. I've helped two different people on their bathroom projects. Just read up at DIY online or some other do-it-yourself publication.

I think my approach would be to pick up the phone and...
...dial my Real Estate agent!
"Dude, you gotta get me OUTTA here!"

I would get an estimate from ReBath and check out the prices on new tubs before you get much farther into the process.

The pink is a gradual process. It's mostly pink carpet and pink tile that we have to fix. We are getting some of the carpet replaced in August and the tile probably after Christmas. Tile will get replaced w/ the kitchen remodel that will happen early next year. (pink tile, blue kitchen sink). The people that lived there smoked crack I SWEAR!
We got an awesome deal on the house and stand to gain A LOT by fixing it up and selling it in 2-3 years.

Look in your yellow pages to see if any plumbing or remodeling contractors carry BATHFITTER products. It covers the tub and has matching shower walls and accessories. Sadly, they must be installed by a contractor.
There must be "Home Shows" in your area that feature home improvements. You can usually find displays there. I found a brief listing for a "Denver Re-Modeling Show" in September (sorry, no details included).
In January is the "Colorado Garden & Home Show" at the Colorado Convention Center.
http://www.gardeningcolorado.com/cghs/cghsdef.htm Their 2005 exhibitor list shows a Bathfitter contractor.

Go for bamboo flooring instead of carpet! It's beautiful, durable and environmentally friendlier, and pretty easy to install yourself, I think.

Pink carpet. Oh, pink carpet. There should be a disclaimer with every sale of pink carpet that no one is to be held responsible if it is put in rooms other than little girls' bedrooms. Which makes me think...who gets the job of naming paint colors? Anyone have a friend who does this?
