Here's a weekend topic that has always fascinated me...

What's Bubba's favorite music? Or Band? Or Artist? Does he even have one favorite?

What kind of tunes does he listen to on the plane?
On his boat?
In the quiet of his home office?
In his I-pod when he's fishin' for Bonehead down island?

I'm guessin' it ain't Brittney....

I'd say there are quite a few Bob Marley tunes in his collection...

But what Cameron thinks of his middle name, I haven't got a clue!

he talks about this several times in A Pirate Looks at 50. I know Marley is there but really can't remember the others. I'm pretty sure he also said he takes along symphony music as well.

Just after the new 208 was bought, Jimmy and Ralph (from Air Margaritaville) brought it here to Chalks base in Miami. While Jimmy and Mike (Ramos) were doing some shopping in town, I was going over the avionics package and "toys" that the then 28 hour aircraft had on it (before I took him over to Hooters for lunch)

The on board XM system was pre-set to a a couple reggae channels, some New Orleans jazz, and some classics as well. Don't remember any country on there at all, at least not on the pre-sets. I do remember Ralph pointing out the Playboy channel on there too.

Nice airplane, still had that "new plane smell" to it too. I have pics of the interior somewhere....

Here are a few of my guesses:
  • Crosby, Stills, and Nash
    Rolling Stones
    Beatles
    James Taylor
    Elvis
Most of these are pretty obvious as he has done some of their tunes. I'd love to know if Jimmy was a big blues fan.

Has anyone mentioned Grateful Dead?

He's covered them twice. And, at two different shows I've heard him talk about going to see them in concert.

These are just ones he said his kids have grown up on. I think he refers to liking John Mayer, but I find it hard to believe that Bubba would be listening to Eminem. I know he's got better taste than to listen to that trash.

Well, I would suspect that if he's ever around his children, then he's probably listening, too. I know for a fact I carry songs on my iPod for my son.

And just because you think Eminem is trash doesn't mean everyone thinks it is. In fact, as unforunate as it is, his albums have outpaced Buffett's and many others in terms of sales and airplay. His last studio, non-soundtrack, effort sold 1.3 million copies in its first week.

I don't personally like all of Eminem's "music," but I do find some of it interesting. As a musician and a writer, I like to keep abreast of all music trends and see what's on the popular culture landscape. I'm betting Buffett and other artists probably do the same thing.

Because it's pop. Anything that gets labelled as "cool" will sell. Doesn't matter if it's trash or not, it will sell.

LTC is an example of that. Suddenly, Buffett is considered "Cool", because of the country stars he's recording with. Now he is having his most commercial success. Most people who have heard his music would agree that , while it is good, it isn't close to being his best work. Yet it sells more. Wny? He's "in" right now. It's "cool" to like Buffett. Just like it's "cool" to like Eminem. That's why they call it the pop charts. Pop is short for popular.

"Just because it's number 1, doesn't mean it's the best music out there"
- Huey Lewis' Dad

Common sense, but I think it has extra meaning since Huey Lewis was so successful.

He stated as his career was starting that his main influences were Gordon Lightfoot, The Neville Brothers, and Joni Mitchell.

I've also heard him say in a recent TV interview that of all the songs HE'S recorded, "12 Volt Man" is his favorite.

There is nothing you can say to me that will convince me that Eminem is not filthy trash. I myself listen to all kinds of music (Opera, Classical, Pop, Rap, Rock, Romantic, Country, you name it.) I consider myself a more musically diverse person than anybody else I know. However, after hearing Eminem talk about beating, raping, and killing his wife and mother, the only thing I have to say for him is TRASH!!! I can't believe some of what he says is legal to sell. I KNOW that Buffett has more since than to respect this disgraceful excuse for music.
