. To say Ricky quit the NFL to smoke pot is not entirely true and is unfair to him. His pot use was common knowledge throughout the NFL so why now would he feel the need to retire for this reason alone...??? and don't tell me because he got caught again. There are literally millions of people that wake up every morning that dread going to there jobs and never do anything about it except b**** and complain. He didn't want to be one of those millions. He never played for the money and it appears he played because he felt like that is what he was suppose to do because he was good at it... that is no reason to stay at a job you no longer enjoy. Maybe the timing wasn't the best but I would think that the rest of his team appreciates his decesion, after all nobody wants someone for a teamate that doesn't want to be there. Hopefully he will pursue what he is really passionate about... Good Luck!
Poor Ricky! He has a job he doesn't like that pays him $3.5 million a year.

The NFL was going to fine him $650,000 and put him on a stricter testing program. That's a lot of ganga! By retiring the fine becomes void. Just because people know you do it doesn't excuse his continued use. It shows a lack of maturity. He has 3 kids to support. He needs to start behaving like man. He's trying to run away from his troubles, but he'll just find new ones.
As far as his "I want to travel" whine: six months off isn't enough time to travel?

Other than neglecting child support (if he is, in fact, not paying), I don't see anything wrong with what he's doing. If he doesn't like his job, for any reason, he has the right to quit - same as any of us do. Only difference is he has the financial ability to not have to find a replacement job. In fact, his leaving may result in the opportunity of a lifetime for some other player who truly does love playing professional football.

just because you would stay at a job that you dislike doesn't mean anybody else has to or should. Sometimes I wish I had the balls to just walk away. Quite simply he didn't love the game anymore and as far as supporting his kids, he made more in 1 year that you and I would make in a lifetime... his kids will be fine.

I totally agree with you RAG. If he isn't happy, he should move on.
I just think that he should have been more considerate of all the people that were depending on him and done it a few months back, where the FISH would have time to attempt to replace him.
I too wish him the best of luck.

as I life long Fins Fan I do wish Ricky made the decision about a week earlier so we could have signed Eddie George

Oh well as long as we bet the Jets that's all that matters

And I hope the Jets and Fish do a good job of beating each other up!

GO PATS!
Doesn't it mean anything that the Dolphins gave up TWO first round draft choices for him?
I would have a real different view on this were it not for the reports in 3 Miami area papers of his drug test failure. He even admitted in the statement that it had a
small impact on his decision. The article on the Dolphin website lists his "passions" as shopping and photography, and now Ricky has added travel. Not exactly ways to make the money last. I genuinely hope he has good money managers that don't screw him. I DO NOT want to see articles 5 years from now about a penniless Williams. That would be very sad.
I've been reading anything I could find on the web about Ricky, trying to understand this. I read that he was diagnosed with Social Anxiety Disorder in 2001, and it contributes to his extreme shyness. Yet his Dolphin teammates say he is open and playful with his friends on the team. The strange part is he "enthusiastically" participated in the spring drills, and reportedly spoke up in a players meeting after drills in June about player commitment to the coming season. He was reported to be in playing shape and a couple of pounds lighter than last season, always a good sign for aging running backs. Then he goes to Australia, comes back with a shaved head, and quits. No warning. If people had reported that this was an issue with him for a while then you would say he's given it lots of thought. This seems like a spur of the moment decision.
This situation frustrates me because I've seen great athletes cut down at their peak who try furiously to come back, but can't.
Ricky just walks away.

Ricky would have a hard time getting back in the league now because he told ESPN that he's been drinking a liquid that masks marijuana use during a drug test.
I'm sure that isn't sitting well with the front office at all.

He is walking away from something he doesn't want to be involved with anymore, it's that simple. The reason this is hard to comprehend for some people is because most don't have the balls to quite something they no longer enjoy especially when making 3+ million a year. 99% of the people would hang around strictly for the money and continue to be miserable. From the Dolphins perspective I can totally understand their frustration and possibly anger over this... let's face it he did screw his team over with the timing of it. Ultimatly though he needed to make the decision based on his needs and his needs only. Again his drug use was common knowledge throughout the NFL. Ricky didn't quit because the NFL didn't want him smoking pot, he quit because that was just 1 small commitment he had to make in a LONG line of other commitments that an NFL player must make. He said it himself... "I'm finally free"

I'm pretty sure the NFL knew about this long before Ricky's statement. You can buy the stuff at GNC. I'm sure about 75% of the NBA takes it
