I'll Be in NYC Aug. 12-15! What to do?
I'm taking my first ever trip to the Big Apple Aug. 12-15 and I'm soooo very excited. I know there are several New Yorkers on BN and I was hoping you could help me out!
We're staying at the Marriot Marquis in Times Square and seeing WICKED on that Saturday. I'm looking for other really cool and exciting things to do while I"m there.
Anyone have suggestions?

Hi. Marriott Marquis is pretty centrally located so there's plenty to see there. Besides the usual spots ( Empire State, Central Park etc.), Ground Zero is of course very sad but worth seeing in my opinion. They may be hokey but those big apple bus tours usually get good reviews from the guests at my hotel. Hope you have fun and let me know if you have any more questions.

Central park is fine during the day. I don't recall what toy store is in Home Alone 2 but the famous FAO Schwarz is temporalliy closed ( it was in "Big"). The hotel thtough that Macaulay Culkin stayed in in Home alone 2 is the Plaza Hotel on 59th and 5th. Sounds like you'll have a good time.MelliJellyBean wrote: i want to talk a walk in Central Park (its it scary?); I want to visit that really big toy store that was in Home Alone 2; see China Town, take a ride on the subway...and take a NYC cab...I want to go to Rupert Jee's Hello Deli; I want to see show on Broadway. yes it was FAO Schwarz.
Letterman show is close to where you are staying also as is Radio City Music Hall. I like going to South Street Sea Port also. Been a while for that though. Carnegie Deli is close to your hotel also.
NYC is a cool city to visit.

Well.. Unfortunately, Monkey Boy will be heading for North Carolina that weekend to see my Sister's wedding so you won't be able to see me! Don't go cancelling your trip though, you'll still find a way to have a good time!
Here's a must do! You have to take a cruise around Manhattan!!! Book tickets at CIRCLE LINE CRUISES for the 3 hour full Manhattan cruise! It's $26 but worth every penny! (Especially for a first timer) Tons of information and the best view of the city that money can buy!
Looks like you've got everything covered! Wicked is a GREAT choice for a show! I saw it over the winter and it's one of the best shows I've seen! Enjoy your trip and when ya get back lemme know how the cruise was!!
One more thing. As far as getting you around. If you don't want to pay a fortune in cab fare and you're pretty good at figuring out maps and such, print yourself out a subway map HERE and by a 3 day unlimited ride metrocard. Then you can get anywhere you want and it's only $21 for the whole 3 days. Otherwise you'll find that you've spent all your vacation money on cab fare.

Some people like to dress up just to make themselves look important. Other dopes just wear jeans and their "I Love NY" t-shirts. I think a nice outfit but not formal is usually appropriate and what most people wear.MelliJellyBean wrote:It's normally a formal affair? If I just wear a dressy outfit would that be fine?
You definitely won't be sorry with that cruise (providing there's not rain). One word of advice on that though: Get there 1 hour before your cruise time to stand in line for the boat. The best seats are on the top deck outside and there aren't very many. You can still see really well from the lower decks inside, but the top is where you wanna be and if you're not there early enough those seats will be taken before you board the boat.

Since I work across the street from the Today Show, please don't block the sidewalk. Some of us have to work.MelliJellyBean wrote:thanks guys...i know that i want to go see the Today Show (i'm a dork like that), visit ground zero and the statue of liberty...i want to talk a walk in Central Park (its it scary?); I want to visit that really big toy store that was in Home Alone 2; see China Town, take a ride on the subway...and take a NYC cab...I want to go to Rupert Jee's Hello Deli; I want to see show on Broadway. Unless you have a death wish, I would go with monkey boy's suggestion about taking the subway instead of cabs. I think you can only get a job as a cab driver in NYC if you don't know how to drive.
what I really mean . . . I wish you were here

Ya I saw that the Today Show didn't have a concert that week, but I'm a big fan of Katie, Matt, Anne and Al. However, I did find out that Good Morning America has a free concert: The Black Eyed Peas....which is a pretty good one! I guess I will have to decide once I get there. http://www.digitalcity.com/newyork/ente ... id=2038486LIPH wrote:Since I work across the street from the Today Show, please don't block the sidewalk. Ever since I can remember, I've dreamed of visiting the city that is always in my dreams...BTW, I checked the Today's Show's website and according to the schedule they don't have a concert Friday Aug. 13.

I second the suggestions so far!
Central Park is beautiful during the day - Strawberry Fields on the West Side (near where Lennon got shot, in front of his apartment building the Dakota) is pretty cool. Also have a drink at the Central Park Boathouse - very pretty.
I also suggest the American Museum of Natural History. (CPW and 79th)
Statue of Liberty is set to reopen on Aug 3 (been closed since 911) so it might be very crowded.
I take cabs at least once a day and think they are fine. Frankly, subways scare me much more.
A GREAT place for margaritas is Rosa Mexicano (61 W. 62nd Street). Food is upscale Mexican, and slightly pricey, but you can just go for some stellar margaritas and guacamole.
After your theater night, you might be interested in taking in some jazz. The Iridium is just around the corner from Wicked. Also, I hear Wicked is great. But another great show you might consider is Avenue Q.
Try to spend some time "off the beaten path" (such as it is in NYC). Walk around the Village, Tribeca or the Upper West Side to experience some very cool neighborhoods. You are staying in midtown which really just gives one perspective on the city. Most of the people you will encounter are other tourists. So definitely try to spend time in one of the neighborhoods.
HAVE A GREAT TIME!!

All real good suggestions I think. Subways and cabs are weird because depending on the time of day one will be faster than the other in my opinion.
