I like pumps, becasue you can control the FPS, but pumping can be difficult for kids with small arms, especially after several shots, which will lead to poor accuracy and decreased enjoyment/interest.
CO2 are convenient, plus his parents can keep the cartriges hidden, rendering the gun unusable when they wish. However, they are not consistent power-wise, and I think it is important for a first time shooter to know how the gun will perform each and every time it is fired.
Spring action (or single pump) are nice for beginners, but have no potential for power, and therefore very easy to grow out of.
