The purpose of a primary is for the members of the parties to decide their candidates in the general election. If you are not a party member you have no vested interest in the choice of candidate. Otherwise, members of a party with a candidate running unopposed could vote for a poor candidate to run against. In NH you must declare a party to vote in a primary. Then two weeks later you can re-register as an independent again.

Is that how Kerry got the Nod?

People went with "electable on paper" instead of the candidate they liked, I think.

My democratic friends agree that they chose the candidate they thought could beat Bush. The details of what the candidate stands for was unimportant. It was interesting to watch them sway with the wind when each new poll came out.

In my opinion, though I never would have voted for him, Dean is the better candidate. At least he stands for something.

Seriously now. The poll numbers for John Kerry are expected to jump 8-10% following the Democratic National Convention! Why? Are 8-10% of the people actually stupid enough to change their vote just because they watched a pep rally with balloons and confetti?
Now don't take this wrong. I'm not saying that people should or shouldn't vote for John Kerry, this isn't an anti-Kerry post, just an anti-idiot post! It boggles my mind how simple-minded voters are and how they will change their vote just because of a bunch of fanfare!
I'm all for the right to vote, but jeez, sometime I really wonder...

I'm sure Bush's numbers will jump after the RNC, also. Only because all this hoopla for the convention has made him fresh in people's minds.
