Going to Cali for the first time
Today I found out that I won a trip through my work to go California for 3 days(I had to give up a ticket to Bristol to do so) and have no idea what to do or expect. We have two days in Monterey and one day in San Francisco. I really don't know the people who I am going with since I am relatively new to the company and may need things to keep myself occupied. Any ideas about what to do while I'm there?

How many tickets are you giving up? And if so... You can always drop them off with me.ConkyTonk wrote:Today I found out that I won a trip through my work to go California for 3 days(I had to give up a ticket to Bristol to do so) and have no idea what to do or expect. Ah yes. . . California. . . I spent about 5 years there before moving to cold Colorado - I miss good ol' Cali!
Lets see ~ Monterey: Go to Fisherman's Wharf. It's an old Whaling center, now has shops great seafood restaurants, etc. The Monterey Bay Aquarium is fun! And of course there is Cannery Row!
Ahhhh yes, San Fran. There is so much to do there - Check out China Town!! Great food!! Ride the Cable Cars and you HAVE to go over to Alcatraz Island!!! Oh and make sure you drive Lombard Street ~ If you go to Haight and Ashbury, go eat at Cha Cha Cha: its a fun, lively Latin American place.
Have fun man, I'm jealous!!

Rent a car pronto and drive south on Highway One through Big Sur - it's one of the most beautiful places in the world - you'll want to spend a long afternoon exploring - your heart will be broken if you just allow yourself an hour or two. Make sure you stop at Napenthe for an incredible view - good lattes on their roof and an awesome gift shop. The beach at the mouth of the Little Sur River will blow you away, especially if you take the time to hike down to it. On the way back, make sure you walk on the white, white sand of Carmel's main beach. Then, have dinner at CAFFE NAPOLI on Ocean (the main street). They serve delicious pasta, fab pizza, and offer a yummy selection of Chiantis and they're suprisingly reasonable, especially since the restaurant's in the middle of Carmel.
In Monterey, day two, rent a bike or better yet, rent a kayak. You can paddle past Cannery Row and the Aquarium and then beach at Lover's Cove in Pacific Grove.....you'll meet lots of other kayakers as well as otters, seals and sea lions along the way. If you have a wet suit and snorkel equipment, you can tie up on some kelp growing off Lover's Cove and see what there is to see.
Between Monterey and SF, make sure you drive up Highway One. It's way more beautiful than the crummy, crowded freeway, and besides, you will get to drive through Santa Cruz! Woo-hoo!! Plus, it really only takes an extra half hour to drive up the coast (mas o menos.)
Have fun in Northern California!

don't know what your tastes are but here's a few things to think about....
monterery... the aquarium is a must see. (check out their website) cannary row is pretty much a tourist trap but good for people watching. if you like nature there's the 17 mile drive that takes you thru the woods and along the shore around pebble beach lots of places to get out of the car and look at the sights....
SFO... gotta ride the cable car, yeah only the tourists do it, but its fun. alcatraz tickets can be really hard to get so if you want to go, get on it right away. second option is the tour boats that go out under the goldengate and around alcatraz. fisherman's wharf is a huge tourist trap now, as is most of the city. but you can tour a WWII sub and other historical ships at pier 41.
if you have a car and want more nature drive across the goldengate and go to the muir woods on northside. its not far and you can see the tall redwoods.
in the city, is the cablecar museum. you can learn all about the history and how they work there. there's also the museum of modern art. union square is lots of shopping if that's your thing. the hot trendy area for bars & restaurants now SOMA or south of market st..... i like to just wonder and look at the old architure in town, the opera house, city hall, the grand old hotels up on mason st. which leads us to one place you must go....
the TONGA ROOM at the fairmont hotel. skip the singapore sling and have a mai tai instead the fairmont is probably the grandest old hotel in SFO.... be sure to check out the lobby before heading downstairs to the tonga room.

What about the music?
When your in SF try and catch a club show for sure! I would recommend the Fillmore, the Warfield, Slims, or Great American Music Hall for starters. These are great intimate clubs that always have someone worth seeing. My personal favorite is the Fillmore, its got a great vibe! PM me if you want more info.
While in Monterey try a restaurant called Passion Fish on Lighthouse Ave. in Pacific Grove (neighboring town). It's got great seafood!
Have fun!!
