Name the games down memory lane

Post by Tiki Bar »

Hi! :D
Some questions popped in my head for auntie's BNer of the day thread, so I thought I'd start a new thread.
1. When and where did you grow up
2. What games did you play as a kid?
3. When you were "it", and couldn't find anyone and gave up, was there a phrase you yelled for everyone to come out of hiding?

1. I was a kid in the 70's, and lived in a rural IL neighborhood with a ton of other kids.

2. ghost in the graveyard
kick the can
spud
statue maker
mother may I
simon says
running bases
red rover
red light green light (I'm sure more will come to me, but I gots ta go!)

3. We yelled "auly auly all come free!"
You’re still grinning, we’re still winning, nothing left to say
I’m still gliding as I go flying down this endless wave

1. When and where did you grow up

I grew up here in Australia in the late 60's early 70's - my childhood home was on "Sunset Boulevarde" - we always thought we were special living in that street
Our house was in suburbia, but we backed on to bushland and all the neighbourhood kids would hang out there in the trees of a weekend (with all the snakes :o )

2. What games did you play as a kid?

The usual - elastics, riding bikes, skateboarding and also we would play doctors and nurses in our little bush houses we built in the bushland :o :)

3. When you were "it", and couldn't find anyone and gave up, was there a phrase you yelled for everyone to come out of hiding?

I just went home and gave up

1. Indiana in the '80's

2. Hmm...I had an older brother and lots of boys lived in the neighborhood, so we played:

Guns
Ghostbusters
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Red Light Green Light
No-laugh contests
rode our bicycles around the block (sometimes to Dead Man's Alley)

3. I just said, "Okay, you guys s***! I can't find you and I know you cheated! So just come out now!"
Gotta Caribbean soul I can barely control...

Great thread TB!

I grew up in NW Ohio in the late 70s/80s.

We just to play marco polo, mother may I, red light green light, base runner, hide n seek, tag, 4 square, and rode our bikes EVERYWHERE.

No real phrase for when I was "it", at least I can't remember. We did call "time out" a lot to get clues where everyone was hiding

Grew up? Who grew up!
I aged into puberity in the '60's, but have never grown up and Peter Pan told me I never will. JOHN
I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now!

creeky wrote:The usual - elastics
?? Can you describe this one? Is it a jump rope kinda thing?

A few more...
flashlight tag
Batman and Robin (only time you'd ever catch me in tights!)
The Green Hornet (that's what we called it when we caught bigass banana spiders and other bugs and stuck them in paint in tin foil) :o
The Beatles (we faught over who could be Paul!)
We built a lot of forts
We fished, cleaned them, and fried them
We caught frogs and crayfish and cooked 'em
When we got a little older, spin the bottle and truth or dare!

We rode our bikes everywhere too - miles and miles! :o Left the house in the morning, came home for dinner.

Anyone lucky enough to have a Schwinn Stingray? not me :(

We also spent a lot of time at the local "creek" (wooded area with stream), building up the rocks so the water would flow over. We thought we were so cool making "dams" in the stream :o 8)

Rarely home before the street lights came on

Elastics... lets see if Ican describe this.

You have a large length of elastic and it is sewn together to make a big band (and I mean big).

Two girls stand facing each other with about 10 ft between them. They each stand with one end of the band around their waist so there is the "elastic band" in the middle and you would go and do things like you would with a jumping rope. ie, you would jump in the middle and do criss cross with the elastic... many variables - could be four girls having the elastic in a square etc...

this makes no sense, but best I can describe it!

1) My younger years were spent in the 70's and in West Michigan.

2) I don't remember a lot of games that we played but Red Rover was a big one ... and coming from a family of boys we were always playing 'Bloody Knuckles' :D :D ... Banana seat bikes!!!! We went everywhere on them.

3) considering we were playing 'Bloody Knuckles' a lot the phrase "I give" was popular.

Grew up in the 1980s in a small town in S.C.--in a subdivision with lots of kids.

We used to play football, basketball, baseball (yes, I was a tomboy), hide-n-seek, capture the flag, deviled egg, red light-green light, mother may I, etc. We also played "war" which involved building forts and shooting bottle rockets at each other from behind the forts (real safe, huh? no wonder bottle rockets are now illegal in S.C.) We also rode our bikes every where and went fishing in the neighborhood pond a lot.

When people were hiding and I couldn't find them, I'd either yell out that I give up or sometimes I'd just go inside and leave them hiding out there. But usually I was the one hiding so well that they couldn't find me.

Bottle Rockets are banned there now????
We used to go to the Battery in Charleston, at night , and shoot from the cannons at each other...Duh...Real bright, huh???

Guess all those stores like "Joker Joe's" off 95 are not doing so well now!

Yeah. You can buy just about any other type of fireworks here still, but no more bottle rockets. All the fireworks places are still doing great business with all the other types of explosive devices available here.

You described it perfectly! That's what I envisioned, but couldn't think of the name for it. I think we called it Chinese jump rope too.

1. I grew up in the 70's in small town PA

2. played many of the same games as have been posted...ghosts in the graveyard, flashlight tag, red light/green light, freeze tag, release, kickball, we could play in the sandbox for hours, chinese jump rope, we would also play "Get Smart" (I was always 99) and we would also have block battles with the kids across the street (throwing mudballs, tomatoes, eggs, water balloons, etc)

3. I think we just said " I give up"

the nice thing was that no one in our neighborhood had a fence so we had quite a large playing area...and the only time we saw or heard from our parents was when called in for supper or when called for a trip to the ice-cream shop and everyone got to go

That's one I forgot! Another "safe" one we also played was "chicken"... in our version, 2 people stood facing eachother with a sharp knife (sometimes the Swiss Army type, sometimes hunting knives :o ), with their legs shoulder width to start. You took turns throwing the knife outside of your opponents stance, and if you stuck it in the ground, they had to move their foot there, take the knife out, and then take their turn. If you stuck it in the ground between their legs, they had to turn around, making it harder to throw it. The object of the game was to make them lose their balance, and/or fall, meaning the Last Man Standing was the winner!

This was great for hand eye coordination, balance, and flexibilty! I'll have to play it with my keets! :o
