Parrothead imposters

Post by phenwayparrothead »

Where I work I see a ton of people casually dressed, and at least a few times a day I run into someone wiht a Jimmy shirt or a margaritaville shirt. My first reaction is always to throw up the fins, and the number of people who look at me like I am crazy is unbeleivable. I t is quite disappointing to see all this Jimmy gear on people who don't really understand what they are wearing.

I was just thinking the same thing. Last weekend at Wal-Mart, I saw a guy like that. I Saw he had a Caribbean Soul shirt, so I spoke. "Nice shirt", I said. He gave a look of Don't bother me  , then grunted something. :( . Hey I was just tring to be PHriendly. :-?

But I have seen others wearing PH shirts and loved to talk about concerts or travels. I mean these are TOTAL strangers :D  :D . The always asked question is "where did you get your shirt?" :D

Atleast there is still some good in the world

This is the way my conversation seem to go:

Me: You like Jimmy Buffett?
Them: Yeah, what's your favorite song?
Me: Gypsies in the Palace
Them: (Look at me sideways) I don't believe I've heard that one.
Me: What's your favorite?
Them: Oh, I've gotta go with Margaritaville

Yep. I have met them too. Especially here, on the island. People vacation at the beach, grab a Carribean Soul shirt at one of the shops here ..add a rum drink , and Instant Parrothead.
Well, that is what they think anyway.
When I travel I look for the shirts, the license plates, etc.....It is a common bond and I have met a lot of other parrotheads that way...

Then I have met some that think if you are a parrothead, you never draw a sober breath....  That is what they think it is all about...
Oh well..at least they know he, and we, are out there!
:D :D

We had dinner at a Tepan Yaki place recently, you know those places that put 10 people at a table and cook right there. Anyway, there was a guy sitting beside us in a CS shirt. So I struck up a Jimmy conversation while we waited for the check. This guy was talking about all of the good investment advice Jimmy gets from his brother  and about how Jimmy always said he didn't need awards and shunned the CMA show. My husband and I just sat there dumbfounded. I just said, "Did you see the part on the CMA where Jimmy performed?" Then our dinner was over and we left giggling at the fakers. I'd rather someone wear the stuff without a clue than to make stuff up.

Before this hijack gets out of hand I'll add my two cents...

To woman wearing Margaritaville t-shirt-
Me: Ah, Buffett fan?
Woman: No, not at all, I just like the t-shirts

Geesh, talk about a conversation killer!

Sometimes I'll say, I like your shirt, followed by a blank look or a thanks. The light is on, but no one is home. On my recent trip to Maui, during a happy hour concert the singer played Margaritaville, he asked if there were any Buffett Fans out there, this was greeted by a few cheers, at the end of the song, I flashed a Phins up sign to another table and they yelled Parrotheads! So sometimes it turns out positive.

It's tough, because work is always a lot more fun when talking to ph's, so its disappointing to see a fake ph. And can be at times awkward when I throw up the fins and a fellow employee thinks im nuts.

My coworkers already know I'm nuts....
Me: I'm off to Dallas to see Buffett this weekend.
Them: Didn't you just see him yesterday?
Me: Yes.
Them: (look of confusion)

That's why I'm thinking a handshake. Fins are great for spotting PHs in crowds or in other cars, but how do you do it subtly?
