One of my best friends is in the 101st airborne and spent most of the past 18 months on the front lines of the invasion. The one thing that we did as his friends and family was held a birthday party for him and audio taped the whole event. During the event everyone took about 10 minutes each to send personal messages and well wishes. We sent the audio tape recorder, tapes, and extra batteries to him in a care package. He said that having our voices on tape was like having a piece of home with him and made his time over there a little more bearable.
My friends 3 year stint in the Army official ends in 68 days, but whose counting!!

Thanks, y'all.
Compared to today's deployments to that part of the world, mine was a cakewalk. Could everything have turned ugly, fast? Sure. But thankfully, it didn't.
Although there's an element of danger every day for an American in that part of the world, there were two days when, because of what was going on, I honestly thought I wasn't going to walk away. Two other days where I thought things might go south, and if they did I would be in real danger. Days like these will certainly make you review your priorities!
God bless those deployed now, and please bring them safely home!

Amazingly, no I don't have a friend or family member deployed over seas right now. I am proud to say, though, that my ParrotHead Club has adopted a Virginia State trooper (and ParrotHead) who is stationed in Iraq and we are sending him goodies and emails!

My best friend is stationed as a truck driver in Fallujah. It's been pretty tough going over there. He was just awarded the bronze star for saving 19 lives up to this point and spotting a MED.

My neice is in Iraq supporting an airmoble (helicopters) company. She spent 12 months in Afghanistan and now has been in Iraq for 6 months. A bit longer then she expected when she joined the Air National Guard however she hasn't complained at all about it. She's a good kid who has learned to keep her head down when shell fragments are flying around.

Part of living in San Diego is the fact that there is so much military here. I would say you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone here that does not know of someone that has been to Iraq or Afghanistan. Most people here know at least one person....I myself know several people that have been to Iraq/Afghanistan, are in Iraq/Afghanistan. They are in my prayers daily. The couple Marienes that I know better. I just send them mail and care packages...the very least I can do.

I'm a Navy Chief with 19 years in serving on both surface warships and submarines. Having been deployed twice to the Middle East myself and having shipmates in the fight as we speak, I can't tell you how heartwarming it is to read your posts on this site. I can tell you first hand that your thoughts and prayers, Letters and emails create a lifeline back to their real lives back home. "Fins up" to all of you supporting your family and friends. And to answer the song question "Sending the old man home" is a great tune, because it speaks to the day when we will put our military days astern of us and look back on it.

Watching the National News every night is filled with sad stories. Last night was about a soldier who was killed the day his son was born. He died without even knowing he had a son.
War is hell, but even more hellist being there during the holidays away from family and friends.
There is a website that I have using to send letters, packages to. The contact person makes sure it is sent onto a military person who may be down that day, or who gets no mail at all.
I am getting a box of holiday cards, and writing in each of them, plus adding clipings about the latest sports happening back here. It may brighten the day of these brave military men and women.
Here is the site if anyone is interested. You just click on one of the names that comes up on the left, and then the story comes up and where to send it.
