That means something in the image url (web address) was typed wrong and the web browser can't find the picture you typed in. So it shows the red X to let you know.

What if was copied and pasted? The reason I ask is that a while back, my happy dolphin suddenly turned into a red x. Very difficult for her to swim like that, I might add. I went back to (I am pretty sure) the same place I got her to begin with and just copied/pasted the url again. And thar she blew! I'm confused..........

I assume this may be the case when some see a swimming blue dolphin, and others don't?
You’re still grinning, we’re still winning, nothing left to say
I’m still gliding as I go flying down this endless wave

Well yes, and no. I've been asked this question since the dawn of time (or at least since I started being a moderator at BN) and I never have the answer.
So what is the poor user with the dolphin in distress to do????
The red x is evil and it must be stopped!

I agree.....

So far all the replys are correct.
- Wrong link typed in
- Picture removed from source (web location it was stored at)
- Firewall prohibits it from work
- Web server (where the image is stored) doesn't allow outside linking to files
Work arounds - Most internet providers include personal web pages. Save the original file to your homepage storeage and link from there.
Also, make sure you include the "http://" tag in front of the file name www.domain.com/imagename.
Searching is half the fun: life is much more manageable when thought of as a scavenger hunt as opposed to a surprise party.
A very common thing is also if the server is down on the site that your avatar is linked from. Usually, their site will be down for a short while, and be back up again fairly soon.

Or it could be that the link is blocked through IE. I have numerous spyware links blocked (180solutions.com, advertising.com etc. etc.). Tools - internet options - privacy - edit web cookie and it could be in there. I doubt if this is your problem but this could also be another reason for the red X. Works good to prevent kids from clicking on spyware links. It does help.
