I'm not saying he should be paroled... BUT... the man suffered from mental illness. Our culture and society's consistent reaction to those suffering from mental illness that commit crimes is to throw them in jail. That in itself is cruel and unusual punishment.
And I'm even less sympathetic to Lennon because I don't think he was the straight-forward peace loving prophet that so many people want to make him out to be. He had political agendas and he was doped up most of the time.
But then again... I'm doped up most of the time too, so just disregard my rantings...

Champan has never been actually diagnosed with mental illness, in part because he repeatedly has refused diagnoses, treatment or observation.
This explains a lot of his motivation here:

Even if, Chapman is diagnosed with a mental illness that does not absolve him of responsibility for his actions.

100% agreed.
Perhaps I'm naive in assuming that in any case with someone who can premeditae a murder that a certain degree of mental illness is not merely assumed but is, in fact a prerequisite.
In the case of Chapman (where the murder was so planned and premeditaed) I don't believe it's about retribution or punishment, but about a societal obligation to keep the rest of the members of society safe from him. And if that requires him spending the rest of his life locked away, so be it.
Whether that's in a prison or a psychiatric hospital is, to me anyway, a largely semantic decision.

If that is true, then why is Chapman still in jail?
