Spinoff from land_shark3 Vegas questions...

Just wondering what everyone's experiences have been. We're not actively considering one at this time, but my parents have one of the "points" system time share type dealies and FIL has one in Winter Park, CO that we use just about every year in May.

What are your experiences, positive and negative. Thanks!

We go to a time share in September at the Outer Banks. I love it!!!! Cant wait to go back again this year. Hopefully all the bad weather will be done.

I'm not the kind of person who can keep going to the same place year after year, and I know entirely too many ex-RCI employees to ever buy one. Besides, the most of the maintenance fees are so high that you can almost go for a week just on those.

If it's the old school timeshares where you are stuck in the same resort year after year ~ then NO

Most these days allow you to transfer your time to other "sister" resorts around the world and even allow for airfare, car rentals, etc. in your "annual" spending if it's one of those ~ then YES

If you've got bout 18-25K you've got nothing better to do with or on average bout $200-$300/month extra cash then sure, go for it

my folks have had a timeshare for a number of years now and have gotten good use out of it. however they've looked into selling it the last couple of years and have pretty much determined it's a lost cause trying to unload it. the brokerage fees are quite high and there simply isn't a market for it. my advice if you're thinking it's an investment forget it.... you will not get any return on it.

I've owned timeshare in Aruba for the past 15 years. Went 6 years in a row and loved it everytime, but then with kids coming and increased airfare haven't been in 8 years! We exchanged it a few times for resorts closer to home, but then figured out by the time you pay the mainteance fee (our Home resort has a high fee--close to $600/wk)and the exchange fee you're almost better off in a hotel.

Still, I'd consider doing it again BUT I'd buy at a cheap resort with the sole intention of exchanging it. I have friends who do it that way (they bought two wks in one of the converted hotels on Cape Cod) and they make out REALLY well. Their mainteance fee is only $175/wk so the #'s work better.

I have issues with both maintenance fees and designated weeks to take my vacation. With my job, I never really know when I'll be able to take off.
