Last Chance at Auction for Buffett at Jones Beach

Post by skiboutins »

*******************************************************
Auction Update on 8/24/2004:
High Bidder is 'dancelikeafool' Current Bid is $400.00
Auction Ends Saturday, 8/28 at noon EST
*******************************************************

Dear BNers,

I am fortunate enough to have two extra tickets to Jones Beach, so instead of just posting them in the Ticket Exchange to recoup the funds, I am instead putting a pair up for auction to raise money for a worthwhile charity and make some lucky Buffett fan a big hero.

Background:
My 17-month-old 'keet Daniel was born with the blood disorder Hemophilia, a rare condition that affects one's ability to properly repair injuries, no matter how small. In most cases, Hemophilia is hereditary, but in very rare instances like ours it was spontaneous and caught my family by surprise.

Overall, my family is dealing well with the situation. We are able to 'manage' the disease by giving daily infusions of 'Factor 8', the one blood component that my son does not produce on his own. By supplementing this missing protein, he pretty much leads a normal 17-month-old life.

The good news is that the experts are closing in on a cure for Hemophilia...many mention that it may be less than 10 years, depending how clinical trials in Gene Therapy progress. We are very hopeful but funding for such research is tight. If you know someone with Hemophilia, then you know that this is a condition worthy of a cure.

Auction Details:
I will keep the auction simple as possible. Between now and next Saturday, August 28th at noon, those that want can post their bid here as a reply. I will start the bidding with a $175 reserve, which is face value for the two tickets with service charges. The BNer with the highest bid as of noon on 8/28 wins. The winner of the auction will write a bank check/money order directly to the New England Hemophilia Association (no personal checks, please). I will meet them somewhere in the Boston area (I am willing to drive up to one hour) on Saturday or Sunday (8/28-29) to exchange tickets/check.

I also would be willing to receive the check by Fedex and return the tickets the same route....anything to make a smooth transaction.

In this way, the winner will know that 100% of the money is going to charity (I forfeit what it cost me for the tix) and as an added bonus, I believe they can take the total as a tax deduction in 2004 since NEHA is non-profit organization.

Their web site is http://www.newenglandhemophilia.org/

NEHA has been very supportive of all the families in New England that are dealing with Hemophilia in their lives. We are always looking for ways to give back.

Ticket Details:

Date: Saturday, 9/04
Location: Jones Beach
Section: 8L
Row: NN
Seats: 13 and 14
Initial Bid: $175
BUY IT NOW: $1000

The tickets are in hand, ready to go. I realize you may pay a little more for these tickets, but in the end, I promise that it will be money well spent and put to good use.

I have been a constant reader and occasional poster on BN and I know there are many great people out there. Please consider bidding if you are need of tickets.

I hope that covers everything. Please forward to others that may be looking for Jones Beach tickets....anyone that would like to help.

My family thanks you in advance for your support and your bids.

See everyone at Jones Beach.

Did I miss something?

Post by skiboutins »

OK, so this post has been up over 12 hours and not one person has posted a bid, a comment or even something off-color.

Do I spell it out that the result is that you get two tickets to see
Buffett at Jones Beach? That the starting bid is FACE VALUE?

I look at the Jones Beach section of the ticket exchange and see MANY
BNers looking for tickets.....well I have them....two good ones.

How can so many be looking for tickets but no one even willing to offer
face value for good tickets?

Did I miss something?

Am I just impatient?

I can't help with the tickets but I did just e-mail New England Hemophilia and as soon as I hear from them, I will make a donation. I hope that in some small way it will help out your little keet. Best of luck with the auction!!

A few tips. Put an add in the ticket exchange I am sure many people come to BN looking for tickets and only look in the ticket exchange. Also post your ad on www.craigslist.org, which is a free online classified ad site each city has they own, NY's is here http://newyork.craigslist.org/tix/ Boston's is here http://boston.craigslist.org/tix/ Also list them on other Buffett fan sites.

It is this kind of stuff that makes me very proud to be a Parrothead!

Excellent idea, and very generous of you to give up the money you paid for the tickets. There are way too many people who claim to be parrotheads but at the same time will do just about anything to make a buck or two off another member of the phlock. You represent us well, and I hope that the winning bid hastens the time it takes to find a cure for your son.

Unfortunately, I am unable to attend the show and therefore will not be making a bid. I just wanted to take a moment to thank you and wish you well.

Good luck and PHINS UP to you and your son.

Put them on eBay (an auction site)........you'll sell them without any problem. There are many Parrotheads looking on eBay that don't look here.

If you were able to ship them to me (hell I even supply the FEDEX pouch pre-labeled), I will bid 400.

Now this is more like it.

Lot of great posts....lots of great Parrotheads.

I am fine with Fedex....I proposed the hand exchange simply because
next Saturday is only one week out from the show and I did not want
to cut it short on time for the winner or myself.

Thanks so much dancelikeafool....and you upped the anty too.

So who is next....anyone?

BTW - I am sitting in the same row so I will buy the first round for the
winner....is it true that Jones Beach is dry inside?

Keep those bids and posts coming.

I got my tickets for GW in a similar manner last year. Yep, I paid extra, but not to the seller; to a (different) great charity!

I already have JB at JB tickets, or I'd bid!

Crank up the bids, y'all!!

something else to consider. your local radio stations have web pages that might include a ticket exchange. you might want to consider that.
also, are you related to jim boutin the former yankee pitcher of the 60's?

to take Mason' idea one step farther - I bet if you e-mailed a local radio station - they would raffle them off for you!!

Thanks for all the great ideas.

I did post them under the ticket exchange....redirecting them to this post.

I think I want to stay with the BN route for now since

dancelikeafool already upped the bid to $400.00.....thanks so much.

Please keep the bids and all the wonderful comments coming.

If Daniel could say anything besides Mama, Dada and Nemo,
he would say 'THANK YOU' to everyone.

great idea-I also wish I was in the area and could help out with a bid.

and best thoughts to you and your son-I first really became familiar with hemophilia in high school after reading Nicholas and Alexandra where Robert Massie spent a lot of time talking about the indirect way that hemophilia related to the Russian revolution. The book fascinated me, and at the time I read everything i could about hemophilia. Another cruel disease!

hope the bids go even higher!

No worries Ski!
I have 4 nephews and a neice and when they fall I get scared they will break something (esp. if they take after me! that's a story for another time!) There is no better way to see Jimmy then actually do something that matters as well!
If I end up with the highest bid, let me know. That following Monday, 3 friends and I are leaving for the Cinncy show so I will have to get the FEDEX stuff out to you on Monday morning!

PHINS UP! And God Bless!
