speaking of dead horses,
When I was a kid my grandparents pony died, my grandad dug a hole and threw him and but his legs were sticking out.
They had to saw them off.
I was there and I hear that has happened a lot.
It's true and we're not even rednecks

Being famous does not abrogate one's first amendment right to free speech. Jimmy has chosen to take an active part in selecting the next President of the United States. No matter which candidate we support, a lot of us could take a lesson from Jimmy in this regard.
HometownFan wrote:There is a large segment of uneducated voters - some will vote for Kerry simply because Jimmy Buffett supports him.
SHAME on them!! Every person in this country can educate themselves on the candidates if they so choose. TV, internet, newspapers... there's no excuse for ignorance.....
HometownFan wrote:Famous people using their power to urge peolpe to vote is one thing but actually getting involved and pushing one candidate over the other is a mis-use of their fame.

No, it's not. See comments above. Famous people do NOT give up their rights just because they are famous.
Sorry.... I know y'all are trying to bury this poor horse carcass..... but I couldn't let this one go......

I'm with you SGH... you don't sign any contract when you become famous that says a) you want to be a role model or b) you refuse to express your views.
Besides, Jimmy's not suggesting the legalization of cocaine, he's supporting his chosen candidate. I don't know how much more American you can get than participating in the political process. Even more, he's not ENDORSING him and saying you should vote for him, he's performing in his free time to support the cause. The fact that it got covered by the media is not Jimmy's fault.
(And even if he was endorsing the legalization of coke, that's his perogative. He didn't raise all of us, and therefore he shouldn't be responsible if we're incapable of independent thought. Why not shift the responsibility to where it belongs: to the individuals who look to entertainers for their life lessons, or to the parents who failed to raise them right?)
Seriously - if you spend this much time worrying about what Jimmy does in his free time, you ARE the problem. Why do you really care what Jimmy does in his private life?
And I think the problem is not that we AGREE with his choice of candidate, I think it's more that you disagree.

I take offense to my post being lumped in as one of the 'dead horse' posts.
All I did was post a link to the show on Long Island, I did a search for it, came up with only Jones Beach posts (see you there in 12 days!!!) so posted a new one. No politcal mumbo jumbo, just a link that I hadn't seen before.
Sorry if I offended the mighty multiple topic policeofficer Captain P.
Maybe I need a lesson in expanded searches ?

I don't think Captain was chastizing you... simply demonstrating that this topic has been covered many times, many ways.

Here's a thought - if you don't like the topic - don't post on the thread. Why are some of you even on this thread .... you are just as guilty of beating the dead horse when you come on and complain about it. Who cares- let people talk about it if they want. I do not see the problem if that's what they want to discuss - just stay off the thread if you are not interested. Am I wrong?

No , actually- this thread interests me - and I have an opinion on it - therefore why not discuss it. Why not get involved in Politics.... it's not like he does it all the time. Is it really that big of a deal? I like his music whether he talks about politics or not.. I always will.

Jimmy's been involved in politics longer than I've been a phan. It's not new, and it hasn't turned his fans off as of yet.

We can solve this problem very easily. From now on famous people can't get involved in politics unless they agree with me. After all, I'm from NY so nobody else's opinion matters.

this is why you don't vote for the president..... you vote for state delegates to the electoral college. they elect the president....

This is hilarious. If Buffett were supporting Bush, some of the well-known
free speech lecturers on here would be singing quite a different tune...and those that are so upset now would be giving the lectures. NOBODY on here
has questioned any entertainers RIGHT to express political opinions. I
think some people would prefer that entertainers VOLUNTARILY choose
not to do so, for any number of reasons.

based on his track record, jimmy's support pretty much guarantees the candidate will lose
sen. graham for prez!
