Can anyone tell me about this place. I got a travel book in the hopes of finding a good, out of the way, non-touristy place to visit. I didn't really expect to find it in a travel book, but it did mention Carrabelle briefly. I found their Chamber of Commerce website and I've been through that, but its always good to hear from you guys. I do know that it had the smallest police station in the U.S. for a while. Just a phone booth! Sounds like a great place to visit. Thanks in advance!

Honestly I have vacationed on St. George Island dozens of times and Carabelle is not where you want to stay. You can drive through in about 2 minutes and it really isn't a pretty sight it seems run down, poor and dirty. My suggestion is anything in the Apalachicola area is not touristy and SGI or Apalachicola are where to stay. If you want the ocean go to SGI if you want the history A is the place to stay. The whole county has one stop light in downtown Apalachicola. In the Fall you are over the high season and there are lots of houses on St. George in all price ranges also the grocery store on the island has a wonderful butcher. It is quiet on the Island and Apalachicola is wonderfully historic and rustic but still has wonderful mostly undiscovered places, like Chef Eddie's Magnolia Grill......wonderful! Really the whole county is great but I don't even know if there is a motel in Carabelle! There is a great restaurant buffet in Carabele or near there just ask anyone can tell you. Franklin and Gulf counties though are both a real step back into old Florida.

I recommend going on out to St. George Island. Eat at the Blue Parrot too!
When they run you out of town make it look like you are leading the parade.

Born and raised in Tallahassee , Fl and I have 2 beach houses on St. George Island. The only reason why you should stop in carabelle is to eat at Julia Maes Seafood, then proceed on to the island. The sign driving on to St George says " St George Island - The Uncommon Florida"....and that is very true. It is very quiet, no touristy s***, and it has some damn good fishing offshore. Check out renting a house in the plantation area- they are top notch.
