ok,so bein a dumba$$ northern boy i need an explanation of the difference between roux and file so i can make a good gumbo.i love gumbo but wouldnt know what kind it was that i've eaten

At the risk of being boiled in a roux by traditionalists I would like to suggest the following.

Zatarains makes a decent Gumbo in the box. It's reasonably quick and easy. You can add in your meats whether it be boudin, andouille, or seafood as well as at things like okra or other veggies.
