Thinking about retiring in Florida

My wife and myself are thinking about retiring in Florida, maybe the Orlando area. After 30 some years with Chicago P.D. I have had just about enough winters and as the song says I need to go where the weather suits my bones. I know they have got hit pretty good this year but not anywhere near as bad as the coastal area. Can anybody advise. Thanks and good luck to all those who suffered damage in Frances our prayers are with you.

My mother lives in the Orlando are and says it's a bit too crowded for her taste which is why she's moving.

most of my family lives in the West Palm Beach area, and before that they lived in North Miami Beach. . . which was cloudy / rainy very often .. . . I like WPB better and i think they do too

I lived in Orlando for 6 years. I'd go back in a second and only moved back here because my family is all in NEW York. I think it's a fun, vibrant but still laid back area. Sure there are plenty of tourist traps but some nice areas to live too with affordable housing. Good luck.

Can you live down there if you don't meet the criteria of being wrinkled and lean on a crutch? Or does that only apply to the keys?

My daughter was at UCF in Orlando last year...She thought it was too crowded..and came back here..
Usually we get worse storms, but this year Orlando got hit much worse than we did...You never know with hurricanes....

I've lived most of my life in Florida, Key West, Ft Myers, FT Pierce and Pensacola. I'd recommend the panhandle, Pensacola to Tallahassee, prices are still reasonable and not yet too crowded, but filling up too fast for me. No state income tax. Sure, hurricanes are a problem but not every year, compare them to the blizzards up north. Storms have given Florida a bad name this year but I still wouldn't want to live anywhere else, yeah, I'm in Atlanta now but that's only temporary.

I may end up that way one day soon CNF...
My dad lives in Panama City, and I get over there frequently...
I like it there...Well, in the off season, and on the mainland...

I'm a native from Hollywood and have family all over the state. I'd check out the area from Cocoa Beach north to Jacksonville. Your still on the Atlantic Ocean, you have less Hurricane strikes and the cost of living is less then South Florida. Happy hunting...

We'd (ok, I'd ) like to retire to the Gulf Coast.....which is cheaper to live in: Florida gulf cities, or Gulf Shores? I mean, tax-wise, etc.?

My phamily and I have been in Cape Coral for the past 3.5 years. We absolutely love it. About 2 hours from Ft. Lauderdale, about 1.5 hours from Tampa. Weather is great all year long.
Shameless plug here: I am a real estate agent and would love to help another parrothead out. PM me if there is anything I can do for you. End of Shameless plug.
Fins up for where ever you decide to retire.

I hear the sailing is nice in P'cola.
Bill, I have a friend with a winter home in Cape Coral..beautiful place.
I'm considering moving out of Cali and FL is on the top of my list. I wish I could retire (ha!) but I think Florida offers the best choices for what I'd like my career change to be....either environmental ed or working with a resort for an outdoor/kid program. I'm more or less locked into my contract at school for this year...but if anybody hears of anything interesting in those fields let me know!

I say one of us wins the PowerBall Game(say when it reaches $300 MM or so), buys a huge palatial estate in Florida and lets all the BN people live there. Kind of a BuffettNews Utopia. Then we can take about $1MM of the money and get a private concert from Jimmy.
See, it's all planned out.

Hmmm, would that be
Bufftopia?
And the Cafe Dreamers are buying an island when we hit it big...but our other plans are about the same as yours.

Maybe you should look into Saint Augustine.
I don't live there but I'm less than 30 miles away which is close enough that I'm there all of the time.
Beautiful historic town, great Buffettesque bars and beaches, fishing ,etc.
I like to call it my "poor man's Key West"
