When recording is commencing at Shrimp Boat…
I was at Key West in June when there was no activity at Shrimp Boat Sound studio, but it really made me wonder what the environment is like when recording is going on. How does Jimmy, the CRB and crew get in there without being noticed and blowing the cover of the studio? Does Charleston hang out by the door to make sure no one attempts to enter? The area around Shrimp Boat isn’t even private, it’s a public walkway the leads to an open air bar and restaurant down at the end of the marina, so they can’t close off the whole area.
How do they get work done there?

To be honest with you, a majority of the people in KW don't even notice.
One of the nice things about KW is that people don't care who you are, whether you be Madonna (who had a place in Truman Annex) or Kelly McGillis (who I never saw in her restraunt, but used to always see at PT's) or Buffett (who, of course, will draw a crowd walking down Duval) or a guy that lives in the mangroves.

In by tunnel
They come in from the tunnel. The Havana to Key West tunnel comes up underneath SBSS... I saw a van parked behind there with the tunnel pass sticker on it...
OK OK, so I was kidding... there is a tunnel from behind the bar at Conch Republic...
BUT I really DID see the Havana Key West tunnel sticker on that van...

That may have been the case back in the 70s when Key West was the Key West as Jimmy knew it (as he says in the Parrothead Handbook), but with all the tourists walking around there these days, I have a hard time believing they wouldn’t notice JB.ColdWaterConch wrote:To be honest with you, a majority of the people in KW don't even notice.

The locals respect him enough not to hassle him, and the only way the tourists would care is if they were parrotheads. Even then, they'd have to KNOW he was there or happen to see him and recognize him as he walked in or out which, if you think about it, wouldn't be near as easy as it sounds.Parrot Monkey wrote:That may have been the case back in the 70s when Key West was the Key West as Jimmy knew it (as he says in the Parrothead Handbook), but with all the tourists walking around there these days, I have a hard time believing they wouldn’t notice JB.ColdWaterConch wrote:To be honest with you, a majority of the people in KW don't even notice.

Shrimp Boat doesn't really have a "cover" to blow... it's non-descript in the same way that most professional studios are non-descript - they're not trying to hide anything but neither are they trying to advertise anything.
The nice thing about Key West *IS* that, for the most part, they let Jimmy and the band do their thing in plain sight. I imagine that if that ever changes (people staking out the studio hoping to see JB or folks knocking on the door) that they will move someplace more private.

I don't remember where I read it, but maybe someone here has the link. But once Jimmy went out for a walk on the beach barefoot, shorts and teeshirt and a baseball cap. He couldn't understand how everyone recognized him! So his friend told him, "Jimmy, you went out disguised as you!"Coconuts wrote:I don't know, he's not a very big guy- you pull a baseball cap way down over his eyes and you probably wouldn't notice him if you weren't looking.

Naw...I'm talking late 80s, early 90's here. The KW locals don't mind celebrities...hell, I used to see "famous" people at different bars all the time...they just don't go hang on Duval during tourist season...but there are tons of other places that locals go that celebrities will also go...PT's, for example...just a nondescript place across the street from the Half Shell, but not a place that many tourists go to eat. Compass Rose was like that as well.Parrot Monkey wrote:That may have been the case back in the 70s when Key West was the Key West as Jimmy knew it (as he says in the Parrothead Handbook), but with all the tourists walking around there these days, I have a hard time believing they wouldn’t notice JB.ColdWaterConch wrote:To be honest with you, a majority of the people in KW don't even notice.

Celebrities would not go to KW if they were getting hassled. Part of KW's charm, even now, is that if you get off of Duval, the town still has some of its old flavor.
As for Shrimp Boat....if you are not a hardcore Parrothead, you just don't know that the place exists.
