as someone who has spent the last year discovering and buying j.b.'s
albums..fanatically,
im really at a crossroads w/the new cd.it sounds really um..country.
there are a few island ditties but i feel the whole tropical vibe is missing.
sure j.b. has always had a little country influence ,especially on his earlier
works;as a musician and someone who goes to the caribbean twice a year,i fell in love with banana wind, fruitcakes, and the the outstanding latin rythems the coral reefers were jamming during that fruitful period.sweet
music.i felt he was on the same path with barometer, beach house...
it seems all the elements of what makes j.b. what he is;you know..
the beach, costa rica, jamaica, sailing(not boats to build).the steel drums,
salsa horns and general good feeling have been replaced with the friggin
CMT.why?5:oo somewhere was a cool duet w/a.j. but why the arsenal of
stars on the new one?it seems really confusing.j.b. makes me smile and want to be on the beach in the caribbean.not on the range in nashville.

I guess you're not a big fan of "Riddles in the Sand" or "High Cumberland Jubilee". :-?

Hey, if all of country music has decided it suddenly wants to go to the beach, and Jimmy was the leader of that trend 30 years in advance, it just proves he is ahead of his time. Now that it's become popular, why shouldn't Jimmy cash in on it? I say, take advantage!

Not sure I am getting the "crossroads" thing.... Maybe you are at the crossroads when you are about to make a life altering decision and take a different path in your life - having to make a tough decision.... but Dude....... you bought a cd..... and didn't like all the songs. Not to sound harsh but..... get over it. I think Jimmy will kick out a slew of more tropical songs. I was not always a country fan but now I am - I like almost everything. Whether you like country or not - country musicians are the ones who admire Jimmy the most. Country is different now - alot of the newer songs have a tropical feel - .. Hang on and keep listening to his music - but considering how many albums this man has put out (and his first albums back in the 70's had country in them...) cut the man some slack.

Not sure why it would confuse you.... Buffett is a musician. He wanted to do something different so... he did. Lots of musicians experiment with different styles at different times. It's what makes it interesting for THEM.

Nashville is a great place to party. And it seems like Jimmy was having a great time and isn't that the entire point.

One of the great lesser known songs is from Riddles -- Come to the Moon.

I suppose because I am an over 50 victim of fate I can't see why the confusion. Somewhere back around '73 the crowd I ran with thought Jimmy, Jerry Jeff, Pure Prairie Leaguge, Graham Parsons, Flying Burrito Brothers, Poco and New Riders of the Purple Sage (just to name a few) were country music. I should add that Merle Haggard was a "true " country act that we enjoyed. Was it the drugs or was it the music? Either way the times and music were good and never forgotten!!!!!! 8) 8) 8)
Indecision may or maynot be my problem. :D :D :D

i totally agree with you. although i like most of LTC, there are some good classic buffett-style tunes, then a number of country ones i cant stand. some i can deal with, but i totally agree, jb needs to get back to fruitcakes or banana wind.. those are some of my favorites

I went into this album expecting not to like it mainly due to the presence of all the country stars but I love it for the most part and think it's one of the best of his latter day efforts. I was also concerned about the amount of cover songs but knowing Buffett's knack for reinterprating other artists material I was willing to give it a chance. Somewhere I think there may be an imaginary line that divides some fans between his more tropical leaning tunes and the more straightforward ones that harken back to his early days. Perhaps this has something to do with when folks came on board as fans, I'm not sure but it's something I've picked up on, particularly with the poor reception Beach House On the Moon tends to receive. I like it because the main focus seemed to be on the songwriting and not conjuring up the next parrothead party anthem that would go over well in concert. I like License To Chill for a lot of the same reasons, just because some songs aren't predominately island style doesn't mean they aren't Jimmy Buffett songs. I was drawn to his music first because of his songwriting ability, the mixture of country, folk, rock and Caribbean made what he was doing unique and kept me coming back for more. That's hard to say about many artists 30 some years on into their careers, especially someone that's experienced the ups and downs Buffett has through a great deal of his.
