Defying Gravity & 9/11

Post by Goodman »

For those who were at Fenway for the show I'm curious if JB explained his choice of Defying Gravity (by Jesse Winchester) as the dedication to those who perished.

Thanks
I know Jimmy Buffett, Jimmy Buffett is a friend of mine. Son, you're no Jimmy Buffett!

He didn't explain it... but I think the lyrics make it pretty clear...

He also used it last year after the Space Shuttle tragedy as a tribute at the Raleigh concert. He got choked up halfway through the song.

It was very appropriate and classic Jimmy.

And in Alpine in June 03 as a tribute to his dad.
And in Chicago in Sept 01 as a tribute to those who were killed on 9/11.

he didn't fully explain, but as he intro'ed the song, he made reference to 9/11 being the next day, then said something to the effect of "we lost a lot of parrotheads that day" and then he let the lyrics tell the story.

DEFYING GRAVITY
I live on a big round ball
I never do dream I may fall
And even one day if I do
Well I'll jump up and smile back at you
I don't even know where we are
They tell me were circling a star
Well I'll take their word, I don't know
But I'm dizzy so it may be so

I'm riding a big round ball
I never do dream I may fall
And even the high must lay low
But when I do fall I will be glad to go
Yes when I do fall I will be glad to go

Must admit, initially it was Defying Goodman. I think I get it now. Niece piece of work by Jesse Winchester.
