Who compiled SYKBH? What if…

Post by Parrot Monkey »

Who? Of course Margaritaville was an obvious track, but why did the other 12 tracks that are on there get on the compilation? Why were songs like Tin Cup Chalice, Tryin’ To Reason, Miss You So Badly etc. ignored? Why did the Havana Daydreamin’ album (which is sandwiched between the six albums that yielded the SYKBH tracks) get completely skip over? Why is Boat Drinks on there? (don’t get me wrong and say I dislike the song, I don’t, it’s just seems like a strange pick). If the compilation was released in 1985, why did it stop at 79?

I ask this because, SYKBH didn’t turn out to be a normal compilation, it turned out to be the “Buffett Bible”. It’s obvious that Jimmy feels a bit pressured into keeping at least 9/13 of these tracks in the set list over the years as he knows that the disc is the only album many have and would freak if (god forbid) CIP (i.e.) isn’t played.

Just think how different things would be if the compiler chose a different track listing…

Please, don’t anyone think I have anything against the 13 songs, as I don’t. I do, like many others, wish Jimmy would take advantage of more of his catalogue, but I’m not going to complain here. This is simply a “what if” thread.

And another thing: Why did they change the cover of the CD to a signature with a yellow background? It dosen't even say SYKBH on the cover. Are they trying to say this is the "signature" album and this is all he has ever done?

Here is what I would have done. This covers 1973, his third album, to 1980. MCA skimped big time on his catalog. I think this would even fit on one record now (CD, whatever, a CD is still a record):

SYKBH new track sequence

1. Cheeseburger In Paradise
2. He Went To Paris
3. Fins
4. SOASOASailor
5. A Pirate Looks At Forty
6. Margaritaville
7. Havana Daydreamin’
8. Cuban Crime Of Passion
9. WDWGRAScrew
10. Pencil Thin Mustache
11. Grapefruit - Juicy Fruit
12. Come Monday
13. Trying To Reason With Hurricane Season
14. Boat Drinks
15. Tin Cup Chalice
16. Migration
17. Brahma Fear
18. The Weather Is Here, Wish You Were Beautiful
19. Cowboy In The Jungle
20. CILCIAttitudes
21. Coconut Telegraph
22. Volcano

MMIM kind of makes up for what is not on SYKBH, as this version of tracks I came up with shows. MCA obviously missed the boat on some must have tracks. And MMIM is still missing some key tracks from the 1970s as well as the 1990s. SYKBH is still a great compilation but it stinks of the time it came out when his record sales were declining. MCA certainly thought the bread was in his earlier albums when this came out. To actively seek this album out instead of any other album nowadays is just wrong.

Jimmy obviously doesn't care about this album. But like you said, he sticks to it for the obvious songs and has been for years for his live show (and Last Mango In Paris for some reason).

A great set list now and until he hangs it up would include songs from Somewhere Over China and Floridays and some other obscure tracks from earlier albums and the would be version of SYKBH of the 1990s albums.

Imagine a compilation of the 1990s!

Fruitcakes
Barometer Soup
Jamaica Mistaica
Beach House On The Moon
Another Saturday Night
Island Fever
Everybody's Got A Cousin In Miami
Don't Chu-Know
School Boy Heart
Christmas Island
I Will Play For Gumbo
Pacing The Cage
Only Time Will Tell
Lone Palm
Bank Of Bad Habits
Holiday
Mele Kalikimaka
A Permanent Reminder Of A Temporary Feeling
Six String Music
Barefoot Children
Love In The Library
Waiting For The Next Explosion
Happily Ever After (Now And Then)

Don't know if those would all fit on one album but it's a solid comp including the two best tunes from the X-mas album. I know there are a couple of covers missing but I think I picked the best one to include on here.

I always thought that the "Greatest Hit(s)" thing on the cd artwork was funny.

Yep, but while it was on the front cover of the vinyl, you have to look at the side panel to see it on the CD release.

MCA finally decided to let one of Jimmy's albums have a bad cover on a CD release (god forbid! :o ), as well as some inner notes, but messed up the neat front cover with just a logo/signature on a yellow background. Yes, I know the gold release has to original cover, but the yellow version is still the mass produced standard copy. It makes no sense to me. Where did MCA find such dim-wit art directors?
