"Always" In The Studio: Willie Keeps Busy

Toby Keith, Norah Jones and Lucinda Williams lend a hand to outlaw country icon Willie Nelson on his forthcoming studio album, "It Always Will Be." Due Oct. 26 via Lost Highway, the 14-track set will be led by the single "Midnight Rider" featuring Keith.

A cover of the Allman Brothers' classic, "Midnight Rider" will also serve as the theme song to CMT's "Outlaws," set to debut in the fall.

Nelson and Jones duet on the cut "Dreams Come True," while Williams chimes in on "Overtime." The artist's daughter, Paula Nelson, also joins her dad for a duet on "Be That As It May."

"It Will Always Be" is the follow-up to 2002's "The Great Divide," which debuted at No. 5 on Billboard's Top Country Albums chart and No. 43 on The Billboard 200. The set has sold 389,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Nelson recently wrapped a tour of minor league baseball stadiums with Bob Dylan. The tireless artist is now on the road again, stopping in Berkeley, Calif., tonight (Sept. 22) and has dates scheduled through mid-December.

In other news, Nelson is among the guests appearing on "Selected Shorts," a new album from Dan Hicks & the Hot Licks, also due Oct. 26. The Surfdog Records release also boasts appearances by Jimmy Buffett, Beach Boys collaborator Van Dyke Parks and Butthole Surfers frontman Gibby Haynes.

I'm not a Toby Keith fan either but I admire artists like Willie, Buffett and Toby who are willing to put their political differences aside in the name of music.

Willie is great in concert!! I just saw him back in August opening up for Bob Dylan. Willie outclassed and outperformed Dylan that night. I am a huge Dylan fan, but that night the stage belonged to Willie. That was the second time that I had the opportunity to see Willie. The first was at Pittsburgh when Farm Aid came to the Post Gazzette Pavilion. Willie even played guitar for Neil Young that night.

I finally got to see Willie in concert for the very first time a couple of summers ago. Being a fan since the early 70s I must say it was well worth the wait.

For those interested, his 70s gospel album The Troublemaker has recently been re-released in an expanded/remastered format. I haven't heard it yet but I'm looking very forward to it since that album was one of the very first things I remember hearing by him (on 8-track no less).

By the way, for those interested there's a great interview with Willie in the newest issue of No Depression magazine.

Yes, it is. If you get a hold of that No Depression interview you'll get some idea of just how much material Willie has sitting in the vault (a lot of it recorded just for fun, ah the perks of having your very own recording studio). He recorded a reggae album a few years back with Bob Marley's Wailers that I hope sees the light of day sooner rather than later. I really loved his duet with Toots Hibbert on "Still Is Still Moving To Me" from Toots' latest album.

That would make for an interesting collaboration. Pretty cool. I'd definitely buy that!

it seems like Willie has like 1000000 live albums . . . no problem with that though!
