LTC- It Holds Up

Post by Goodman »

Well the show at Jones Beach is long past and I took LTC out of the CD player replacing it with Steve Goodman & Jerry Jeff Walker. I figured it would sit awhile on the shelf. Much to my surprise I put it back in and hell I really like it.

"Well I know she's no big deal to some folks, but she's near everything to me. My whole life lies hearing what's in LTC." :-)
I know Jimmy Buffett, Jimmy Buffett is a friend of mine. Son, you're no Jimmy Buffett!

I agree. I did the same thing after seeing the Pittsburgh show but I find those songs still running through my mind so I've played it a few times since then.

The LTC is a strage contraption. It grew on me at an unbelievable pace this summer, and I still listen to it on a regular basis...but lately, I have been listening to the older JB stuff. The A1A, White Sport Coat..., stuff like that. But LTC certainly does hold up, and I LOVE that album!

I love LTC (not Shane's version  ).

I can't decide which is my favorite song. I guess it depends on my mood. I can't stop listening to / singing "Someone I Used to Know" & "Window on the World". But a couple of weeks ago I was wearing out the tracks for "Boats to Build", "Trip Around the Sun", "Back to the Islands" & "Hey, Good Lookin'". And "Piece of Work" has gotten a lot of play. I think "Coast of Carolina" is a wonderful, beautiful song, but every time I hear him mention Groovy, it makes me depressed and I switch the song. I have a thing about losing people.

I know mine is a minority opinion but I honestly think License to Chill is very nearly the absolute pinnacle of JB's career. There's something for everyone on this album: country-tinged, tropical-flavoured, wacky humour, moving ballads, amped-up rockers... and yet it all seems to meld into one harmonious work. I honestly can't think of another Buffett album that manages to gather in as many styles and wrap them all up into one neat package.

From start to finish, it's an absolutely incredible experience. I think it holds up well even when compared to some of the legendary early albums -- and it's a heck of a lot longer, too. I don't even find myself skipping over any of the songs -- even the ones I wasn't sure of have grown on me.

The lithmus test for me is this: How many of the tracks would I put on my MP3 "best of" collection? Usually I end up using about half of the tunes, give or take. For the first time ever, I've included everything.

so sorry to admit.i hate ltc
too much country.way too much country.
i know j.b. has always elements of country music and hell even quite a few country songs, but i just think this album is infested with too many video cowboys.had this album contained duetsw/ willie nelson.lucinda williams, lyle lovett,or a serious c&w songwriter.i might feel differently.
toby kieth and kenny chesney are very weak artists.sure they move millions of units but the music has no substance.and this is j.b."'s first#album in history,so maybe he may plan to trade in his flip flops for a pair of boots.gitlongnowlildoggie.

Baffling Words....

Post by SchoonerWharf »

"music has no susbatnce"...hmm I wonder how many thousands of times people said that about Jimmy during his career...and were utterly and completely wrong. We all know better than that.

One gets the impression you were all set to hate LTC before it even came out since your post complains about "who" is one the album and makes no mention of the actual music on it. Very telling.

As an example, I think James Taylor is one fo the most overrated artists of his generation, but I love just about everything he and Jimmy have been involved with together.

My litmus test is real simple...do I like the music??? I don't worry about these other things you are concerned with.

when i said the music has no substance,i was refering to the careers of t.kieth and k.chesney.and the likes of them too.l would never make a claim that jimmys music has no substance.one of the things i love about jimmys music is that he tells amazing stories in everyday easy to understand terms;whether he is employing reggae rythems, latin salsas, acoustic balladry,or out to sea chanties, theres always been that caribbean ,on the beach,on the water, pirate for life element to him and his music.that element is gone on LTC.he is perfectly capable of building boats with a.jackson or belting out hey good lookin with the whole all star gang.its all very safe, country radio ready...tripe.anyone could have recorded these songs with this crew and achieved the same results.thats why i love j.b. no one could have written fruitcakes,or lone palm or tin cup challice and gave you that feeling of complete wonder.j.b.'s music is a part of my life everyday, and ltc does not give me that feeling.back to the island does.....but thats when the cd ends ,isn't it?

From day one I've been saying that this cd is more tropical than anything he's done in the last few years.
I myself like Toby Keith and never understood why so many parrotheads apparently don't. I'm guessing that it's his patriotic songs or the so called Dixie Chicks fued.
I also like Kenny Chesney

LTC has been one of the ones I have left in my 6-CD changer all summer, too . . . the only cut I skip is "Simply Complicated" - a novelty number whose "novelty" wore off REAL quick!!

I love Boats to Build, Coast of Carolina (clearly for Jane) and Sea of Heartbreak . . . man, little guitar riff gets me every time . . .!!
