Not entirely true, Tom. Members of Congress do pay into SS at a current rate of 6.2%. They also must pay at least 1.3% into their pension fund.
Don't get me wrong, it is a sweet deal for them. However, it's not quite as sweet as alot of people seem to think.
and dont they continue to collect the ridiculousl high salary and benefits until they die?

Not as much as you think. It all depends on how long they are in (which pretty much dictates how much they paid into the plan), their age at retirement, and which pension plan they chose to join. Under no circumstances can they recieve a pension in excess of 80% of the amount of their salary at time of retirement. It's generally much less than that though, averaging about $42,000 per year. As for medical benefits, they are not much different than those of private sector pensioners. They still have deductables, copays, etc. for medical care.
