I've had a soft spot in my heart for a long time when it comes to Cuba.
When I was small, my parents would occationally drive by and point out
the mansion that Batista lived in after he was exiled to the Daytona Beach
area. (Howcome bad-guy political exiles always end up in such plush spots?)
Then, over the years I've been friends with Cuban exiles my age (all male

)
who are intelligent, wonderful people who know their roots (and hearts) have
a focus in a distant place that they may never see again. One young man I
dated in high school was the son of a besbal player whose mother refused to
leave her parents when her husband "got out" with the children. Another man,
a fellow pharmacist at work, left with his family when he was 16, and longs for
the day when the exiles can go back and re-establish a thriving Cuban
economy and free culture. It has been very interesting to see the situation
through these men's eyes instead of just the wrangling in Washington
over the sanctions this country maintains against the government and the
commerce there. I just hope they (and I) live to see it change in our lifetimes.
