If you can't go on Saturday Night Live and perform live perhaps you shouldn't be on there to start with. Of course the days of actually having worthy musical guests on that show are long gone.

1 and 2 were the same thing... and yesterday she admitted she was going to sing to the track because she couldn't canel the performance... that seems pretty honest to me.

Her voice may have seemed fine before, but that's because the mechanics of singing and talking are different. Acid reflux causes swelling of the vocal folds, which means when she talks it might sound a bit husky but that's it. The problem comes when you try to take swollen vocal folds and make them vibrate consistenly at singing range... the swolleness makes them less responsive and less able to move (like any swollen muscle) so while she may have spoken fine, she may not be able to sing at the level and consistency she needed to.

The problem gets compounded by rehearsals. She sang in rehearsal but she may have overpushed to compensate for the lack of responsiveness and, as a result, strained it. Again, maybe not so noticeable at speaking level but problematic when singing....

Sounds like she had one of three choices that evening once she realized she was in trouble:

1) Cancel the appearance entirely.

2) Sing and sound shitty.

3) Use the backing track.

Given the exposure SNL provides, I don't know that there's an easy choice....

She wasn't being dishonest... she was doing what others told to do and she reacted out of fear, embarassment and some immaturity. Now I'm starting to really feal bad for her... whether I like her music or not...
I gotta admit, I'm hardly feeling sympathetic toward her bonehead move after she realized her cover was blown. Welcome to showbiz, sweetheart!
This is a great example of what happens to an immature, inexperienced, MTV-bred "Star is Born" when the whole train starts moving too fast.
You lose your grip for just a moment, and you fall off real hard!

I wouldn't care if this derails her "music career", cuz it has given her the first taste of how quickly they'll turn on you once you've stumbled, and it takes true talent and chops to be able to overcome this kind of adversity. I just got back from Vegas, and I wouldn't have put my money on her future then, and certainly not now. It was a fun little year...

Even that ol' veteran (!) Britney has figured it out, and is taking her money and running the other way real fast. I would bet SHE is the next thing you'll being seeing
for a two-night run at the Aladdin

To add to the fun of this discussion she blew off a scheduled performance at Granger High School in West Valley City, Utah this past Monday. No statement has been issued so far as to why she didn't show up. The radio station that had arranged for her to come play indicates that they haven't heard from her yet.

Seems like she's too busy spinning the SNL thing to show up to paying gigs.

Avril Agitated Over Lip-Synching

While she can relate to the pressures of learning how to play live and work an audience for the first time, Avril Lavigne says she takes exception to the practice of lip-synching, which has been in the news thanks to a slip-up during Ashlee Simpson's appearance last weekend on "Saturday Night Live."

"You know what, there are a lot of people out there today, who have become stars or famous musicians -- I wouldn't really define them as a star -- with a record only because they have connections and only because they have money and for the wrong reasons," Lavigne tells Billboard.com. "And it sucks. Actually, I know for a fact there are some young female artists who don't even sing on their own records and who don't sing live. And that is pathetic."

She quickly adds, "I got signed because of my voice. That's what [Arista head Antonio] 'L.A.' Reid signed me on. He said, 'Wow, you are only 15 and you can really sing. I'm going to sign you.' And I've never lip-synced once."

Lavigne is in the midst of a North American tour that drops in on Hampton, Va., tomorrow (Oct. 30), and the artist says she's more confident than ever. On stage, she's singing, playing piano and even showing off her drum chops on one song.

While she admits she's been doing a little writing on tour, and live material is being gathered for an eventual DVD release, there is no timetable for her next project. Says Lavigne, "No, I'm going to be out here for a while."

As previously reported, the artist recorded the theme song for the upcoming "SpongeBob SquarePants" soundtrack, due Nov. 9 via Sire.

"I sang the theme song but did my own version for the movie," she says. "I had never done anything like that before so I said that would be kind of cool. You know, a good experience. I just did a rockier version -- a me version of it."
