UPS and a Wrong Address

Post by magnus »

Here's my dilemma - I sent my bud a BD present via UPS. I had a huge blonde moment and sent it to his old address. It was delivered 10/27 and left on the porch. Am I totally screwed or can UPS go ask for it back?

Sounds like a question for UPS. I would be writing a letter to the old address and asking them to send it back to you. If there is good in this world they will accomodate you. They can send it postage due. :)

If you plug the address into an online directory, you may be able to get a name and phone number (will not work if the people have an unlisted #, though). If you get the number you could call, explain the mistake, and maybe set up a way to get the package back.

Good luck.

Here at my office we send things out UPS and FedEx. Did you send it with a signature required? If you did you should be able to call them and have them reroute it back to you. If you sent it without a signature required they will just drop it at the door and it will sit there until someone grabs it.

My co-worker sent some rare coins to an appraiser a few months ago via UPS from a UPS store. They delivered them to the wrong address. When he called the appraiser to find out what was taking so long the guy said he never received them. So my co-worker calls UPS who tells him that they were delivered but to the wrong address. UPS refuses to go and try to get the coins back and to top it off they refuse to reimburse him even though he insured the package. According to their fine print in their phonebook sized tariff book, which the consumer doesn't have access to, coins and collectables are not covered by their insurance.

Now my co-worker is a nice enough guy but we're talking over $500.00 worth of coins so he called and spoke to customer service who admitted it was UPS' fault and that UPS would make good on it. Then comes the letter from UPS legal department stating that they won't make good on it. So he' taken them to small claims court and is awaiting the judges decision.

So far UPS has not impressed me but I think it will be great fun if a judgement is rendered in favor of my co-worker. He'll go seize a UPS truck and then contact all of the shippers and let them know to go file claims for late delivery!

If UPS sent it where you told them to, it's not their fault. They did their job and you have no recourse with them.
You can try the suggestion of contacting the people who live there now. I wouldn't hold my breath but it never hurts to try.

I didn't mean it to sound as though I was blaming UPS. But I thought maybe the new tenants would be more likely to return the package if a UPS guy came back for it and said "Hey. I left a package here that wasn't yours."

And actually a small part of the blame does lie with UPS. According to them, packages can only be left on a porch if there is a signed agreement with the tenant. Even though the package was mis-addressed (totally my fault), the name on the package did not have said agreement so they shouldn't have left it without a signature.

My friend just moved one town away, so he's gonna go ask for his present at his old address. Hopefully some nice people live there. (I doubt it though. He moved because it had turned into a not-so-savory neighborhood.) If that doesn't work, UPS gave me a couple of options.

Normally, I'd just let it go, it wasn't worth all that much dollar-wise. But it was a special thing - something that took a lot of time and effort on my part and wouldn't mean much to anyone but me and my friend.

Our UPS lady was just in the office and I asked her what could be done in this situation. She said to request a "Driver Follow-Up" and explain what happenned. Then, UPS will go to the address and attempt to retrieve your package. There's a claims process you can undertake if the recipient refuses to give it back or claims to have not received it.

Hope this helps.

He might want to seek some legal advice before putting that plan into action.
