IMHO, this country failed at that task yesterday. An economics professor that I had said that people tend to vote out of economic self-interest and that is one of the primary reasons that I voted for John Kerry. If Bush continues to cut taxes and support the war in Iraq, then something in the budget has to be cut. And in July, that cut will most likely be my job in social services. (And Shane, I don't believe that is an outrageous gripe.) And never in all my years as a social worker has the need been greater. So for me, this in indeed a sad day. I just want to keep my job and keep helping people who cannot help themselves.Elrod wrote:It's time for us to support and elect statesmen rather than politicians.12vmanRick wrote:Politicians do not care about the "good for all of us" anymore(if they ever did). Okay, this I can get on board with. I am suprised at the number of people that don't believe that people can do whatever the hell they want to. How does it really affect the people that voted for the ban? I don't get it.Key Lime Lee wrote:What concerns me more is the number of folks who voted to ban gay marriage and limit domestic partner rights....

I don't want to or mean to be starting something when I ask this. I just really do want an honest opinion on something you said. Why do you want to keep working hard for your money and continue giving your hard earned money to people that do not care to help themselves and think that because you work hard for something and they don't that they should be allowed to have part of your money for nothing ?
As far as budget cuts, YES. I hope it doesn't affect your job BUT I can tell you I go into Federal Buildings in Atlanta a LOT and you can not imagine the amount of FAT that can be cut there for people that are making a decent salary and doing NOTHING. I have actually seen people sleeping at their desk and doing nothing but surfind and playing games every time I walk in the door.
When they run you out of town make it look like you are leading the parade.

IMHO that is a bad cut but the worst cuts are those that have been made in education. Namely fine arts and music. But for the smaller school systems the cuts have been accross the board. Our children deserve a better education that they have been getting for quite a while. I'm lucky my son is in a school system that this has not as yet been a major issue, but it's beginning to happen. His high school football team has played schools where it is clearly obvious the school has faced cuts in it's fine arts department (by the appearence of the band and condition of the school instruments) while the football team was wearing new uniforms. A nearby school system is broke and teachers are being laid off. Makes one wonder what the future of public education will become. IMHO the key to getting many people off public assistance is thru education.big hat carmen wrote:IMHO, this country failed at that task yesterday. Rick, I didn't take offense at your question. And no, I don't want my hard earned money to go to people too lazy to help themselves, but there are people who cannot help themself who are going without basic needs, like housing and food. The program that I run works with severely mentally ill, like schizophrenics. As for working, do you want your hamburger to be served by someone who is too ill to attend to basic hygiene needs? As someone who deals with the welfare system on a daily basis, I probably hate the "cheats" more than most people because they take services away from those truly in need. I barely survived the funding cuts in July so I am sure that my program will not survive after the end of the fiscal year.12vmanRick wrote: I don't want to or mean to be starting something when I ask this. It is about what is right and moral. Sorry you cannot understand those subjects.
Please move if you do not like it. I hear that there are some European countries that will accept you.

From my perspective, I see our country moving away from caring about person centered issues, like education and social services. Yes, defense is important, but I believe there needs to be a more balanced approach and I don't see that.

I think Lee is saying that people are morons. Which, in spite of the election turning out the way I wanted, I wholeheartedly agree with.RAGTOP wrote:please explain what you mean by that. This is the frightening thing going on in this country. Why can't Lee & I have a different view of what is "right and moral"?
