The Antichrist Has Spoken
Poison’s Michaels turns country
By David Burke
.
When the rock group Poison gave its first interview in 1985, lead singer Bret Michaels was asked what his favorite kind of music was.
.
He answered rock — and country.
.
In the nearly two decades that followed, the rock side of Michaels has been shown with Poison songs such as “Talk Dirty To Me,” “Unskinny Bop” and “Nothin’ But a Good Time.”
.
Now, Michaels’ country side is showing itself. The 42-year-old is releasing his first album, “Freedom of Sound,” early next year. Its first single — the ballad “All I Ever Needed,” a duet with Jessica Andrews — has just hit country’s Top 40.

“I love Lynyrd Skynyrd and Kiss, but I also like George Jones and Tammy Wynette and Patsy Cline — stuff that I heard that my father played,” the Pittsburgh native said from Nashville. “I like pedal steel, I like listening to the fiddle.
.
“I’ve never really segregated music. I just like what I like.”
.
Michaels’ foray into country isn’t recent. He recorded an album of country demos in 1995, and it’s on sale at his Web site.
.
The lines between country and rock are blurring more every day, with stars like Garth Brooks, Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw unabashedly displaying their rock upbringing in concerts. In a concert, Chesney joined Poison on stage for “Every Rose Has Its Thorn,” and Michaels returned the favor.
.
“A lot of the audience had Poison shirts on at his show,” Michaels said. “It’s a very unique, cool experience. A good song knows no boundry.”
.
“Every Rose” is the only Poison song Michaels is rerecording for the new album. He’s joined by singers from 3 Doors Down and Rascal Flatts, and solo acts Chris Cagle, Mark Wills and Jessica Andrews.
.
“We literally went in and had fun singing it,” he said. “People fantasize what a night in the studio might be like — having fun, drinking a couple of beers and making music the old-fashioned way — and that’s what it was.”
.
Michaels is getting exposure on country cable channel CMT, as part of the Outlaws concert that debuted this month, putting him in a duet with Hank Williams Jr. on “Family Tradition.”
.
“If anyone would have said you’re not coming over (to country), it would have been him,” Michaels said.
.
Michaels has the blessing of his fellow band members for his country solo project, although none of them are fans of the genre, he said.
.
“Everyone in the band is slowing down on making new music. And I just live for making new music,” he said. “It’s no offense to the guys, because they’re my best friends since junior high school, but they allow me to do my thing. I’m adamant about keeping fresh music coming in.”
.
Michaels returns to the Quad-Cities for the fourth time in the past five years, with a show Wednesday night at Quad-City Live. With a five-piece band, he’ll do some stuff from the upcoming album as well as Poison hits.
.
“It’s the energy and excitement of a big arena show ... and it has the feel that I’m playing in your living room,” he said

And Bret is HOT!

Sometimes yes and sometimes no. I actually liked it a lot in high school but then my interest kind of faded. It's slowly crept back in but BG can't stand it so it doesn't get played at our house very often.ph4ever wrote:buffettbride wrote:OMG! I totally LOVED Bret Michaels and Poison. Rex Hobart and the Misery Boys do a really cool version of Poison's "Every Rose Has It's Thorn" that's on the Making Singles, Drinking Doubles compilation that came out on Bloodshot Records a few years back. The Meat Purveyors "Madonna Trilogy" (Madonna set to bluegrass) is also quite hilarious and makes that collection well worth seeking out.
