My business idea, any thoughts
I live in a beach town. I'm thinking of starting a business during the off season of getaway long weekends. These would be themed. Examples, ladies getaway with massage, yoga on beach, lots of down time, nice food - Running retreat - with early morning beach runs, guest speakers, pasta dinners, stretching class - Gourmet cooking weekend with visits from area chefs, how to make a nice brunch, etc - Wine weekend with visits from/to area wineries, guest speakers, tastings, etc.
Any thoughts, advice.. Anyone do anything like this been to anything like this? Maybe a Buffett/island themed winter weekend would be nice too.

Eat seafood? Use bait? Thank a commercial fisherman.

a great idea just some thoughts.. make friends with the crew
who sends the meat/seafood/produce. not the bosses or sales men
the crew who picks your orders/cuts your meat/ portions your seafood
they can make your life sweet with good product and I mean the best
too often people think the salesmen are the king but let me tell
you the Places that slipped us a meal or a bottle once in a while got the
hook up.
also IMHO the biggest mistake when starting a new Biz is
people sink every last cent into startup and leave no cash to run the joint
I mean have at least 6 months of operating capital in the bank
and better yet a year. again IMHO this is why the Majority of restaurants
and bars go toes up with the first year.. the money will come but
not just because the sign out front says open.
my 2 cents.

Thanks for the great advice ragtop. I ran our family hvac business for 15 years, and still handle a small customer base with that. I've also done some small business start up consulting so I'm not a complete virgin. I've been looking for something I can do for myself. And since capital is low I know it has to be service oriented. On the plus side, we dont rely that much on my income. And I substitute teach which lends itself well to starting a business, as I can take days off here and there as needed. I also do alot of community service so I have some local connections to help with things. But I don't expect my customers to be locals, and getting these will be the biggest early challenge.

OH I know thats not at all all wine and roses either.longlinergirl wrote:Ragtop..you should be on the seafood catching end of that stick
but the CO. where I worked hired workers off the street to work in the freezer and paid them 6$ an hour more than the seafood crew who had all been there 3 years at least.
