Advice needed from Chicago peeps :)
Hello everyone! Anyone here who knows me knows that I adore the Red Sox!!
However my favorite NL team is the Cubs!!
I've heard a rumor that the Sox will be playing the Cubs at Wrigley June 10-12. If this really is the case, I'm considering taking the trip to Chicago to see a game between my two favs at a stadium I have always wanted to go to!!
I've never been to Chicago and was wondering if any of you could lend some help in choosing hotels, restaurants etc......
If I make it, it will be me and one of my girlfriends. Your input is much appreciated....Thanks!

I can recommend the Palmer House for a hotel, you should be able to get a decent room rate this far out. Nice thing about the Palmer House is that you can catch the Red Line Subway north to Addison and the Park by just walking out the west door and a few steps to the station entrance. (Pick up visitor passes for the CTA at the airport when you get in).
Restaurants, basically the Red Line up to Grand Ave. puts you into the River North area, and there are a ton of good places up there. If you want to get adventurous, head over to Ontario and Wells (Purple Line to the Merchandise Mart), with a stop at the Shamrock to recover from the ride, and get a table at Gino's East for some incredible pizza.

I live in Wrigleyville. If you are coming for the weekend and the ball games are your top priority I would stay in the area. There is a nice Best Western (I think it is called the Hawthorne because it is located at Hawthorne and Broadway) which is only about 4 blocks to the ball park. As for restaurants and nightlife, the area around Wrigley Field is one of the biggest summer time night areas in the city. Up and down Clark Street just south of the park (the park is on the corner of Addison and Clark), there are bars and restaurants galore. You are just a short bus or "L" ride to the downtown area and I would think this hotel would be much more reasonably priced then the ones further south. If you are interested I could get the exact name for you.
If you choose to stay in the near north area (Michigan Ave) or the State Street Area (the Palmer House) do yourself a favor and don't try to drive to the ballgames. Not only is parking very, very limited it will cost you an arm and a leg. Taking the "L" is the best way from these areas.
Tickets have not been put up for sale but I agree with everybody that the Red Sox and Yankee series, along with the crosstown series with the White Sox, will be the premium tickets for the season. There are a ton of ticket brokers right around the ball park. Good Luck.

How foolish of me to assume I could get tx at face value
do you think they will really be THAT outrageous?

We went to about 15 games last year and the only games you can even get close to face value are weekday night games against off teams. On the morning of the game the box office opens at 8am and will release standing room only tickets for $10. These are usually bought up by the scalpers, however it will be your best bet to get tickets. If you want seats expect to pay $125 for nose bleeds in the 500 section, and $200+ for bleachers. A good place to watch for tickets is craigslist.com. We bought a lot of Cubs tix there last season for reasonable prices. If you cant get into the game it is a great atmosphere to hang out at the Cubby bear, Yakzies, High Tops or any of the other great bars right outside the park.

Thanks Pirate and Thill!!
I don't know why I thought it would be easier to get tickets at Wrigley than it is at Fenway!
I was interested in seeing Chicago as well, but it sounds as though it would be better (and less expensive) to stay near the park and then take the train in rather than the other way around! I was really hoping to avoid having to rent a car....how far is the stadium from O'Hare? If it's more than a $50.00 cab ride, I may have to reconsider. Keep the suggestions coming peeps...I'm all ears!

Yep, the White Sox tickets will be much cheaper and easier to get -- and there are several good reasons why...but I digress.
You can get the "L" (subway/elevated train) from O'Hare or Midway into downtown and then connect to the north side (to Wrigley) so the expensive cab fare isn't necessary. If you want a real baseball focus, stay in Wrigleyville; if you want a broader perspective of Chicago, stay downtown (Palmer House) or River North (more $$). There are good restaurants in many parts of the city, and public transport is really pretty good. I agree with the others that the game tickets will be the toughest and most expensive part. But then again, it's a great place to see a game.

figure on a cab ride probably costing that much, depending on traffic and the like. ORD may almost be a straight line west of Wrigley as the crow flies, but you won't be riding a crow. Another reason why the CTA is a good idea, you can make a direct connection from the ORD Blue Line spur direct to downtown.virgin prthd wrote:Thanks Pirate and Thill!!I don't know why I thought it would be easier to get tickets at Wrigley than it is at Fenway!

There is a shuttle bus that operates for most of the downtown hotels. I don't know how much it costs but I am pretty sure that it is less than $50. I would due some research on the internet as to the hotel and ask them about modes of transportation. Some of the higher end hotels have their own shuttle. From where I live in Wrigleyville, it costs me only $75-$80 for a town car.

The year Wood went against Clemens ( Yankees) tickets were astronomical. I was in Chicago on business, remember bleacher seats alone were going for around 1200-1400. Other seats going for over 2 grand a piece. I have a feeling that the prices will be slightly higher then that. You best bet is finding someone who has season tickets, and start kissing as much behind as you can.

Seriously though...thanks to all who have responded so far. I will be putting together a few questions to ask regarding areas and transportation lines....
It's all foreign to me as I have never been to Chicago before. Public Transportation ...."the T" here is all color coded...i.e. Orange line, Green line, Red line, etc..... So please be patient! Thanks so much though! You have all been very helpful so far!
