I'd give a lot just to see the title of the thread changed! It upsets me just to read that!!! I haven't read the article or the thread. I just can't. It's too horrifying to contemplate and depresses me terribly!!

I saw nothing wrong with it myself. It happened very near to where I live as well as near where FP lives and if anyone reads this whole discussion and recognizes what has happened here in someone they know and as a result it causes someone facing the same problem to get help then something positive has resulted in a very tragic thing.

Thanks, Four Play. You're right, it's still depressing, but much less graphic. Thanks for indulging this PH with a weak stomach.

Jury selection for the trial starts tomorrow. She is pleading not guilty by reason of insanity.
The prosecution is not seeking the death penalty...

Yes this did happen then. My parents know a lady in her 80's who spent most of her life in a mental hospital for killing her whole family...a bunch of kids and her husband now determined to be PPD.

Of course usually PPD you don't see violence. A mom will drown or smother the baby (ies) not hack them up. At least accoprding to my psych and criminal justice professors...

the thing about ppd is that it can strike ANYONE so there's really no way to determine who will have it.

However I do think that if a woman has had a history of ppd there needs to be some sort of additional monitoring set up to protect her or the children.

And that's the thing, women who have no history of mental illness, individually or in their family, can suffer this. Pregnancy causes a whole lot of chemical changes in the brain, and it can strike the most 'unlikely' candidates.

Which makes it even harder on the mother, since she could be the perfect person and everyone views her as someone 'so together....she'll be the perfect mother'. Then she feels even more guilty, and harbors those feelings inside because she doesn't think she can talk to anyone. It's a shame.

Wow...what a tragic story on so many levels. I can think of so many things to say...but I guess I'll just leave it at hoping those who need help can find it so such things don't happen any more.

The trial ended in a hung jury.
No word on whether there will be a 2nd trial...

It's a lengthy article, so here is the link and an excerpt;
http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent ... 72ceb.html
Dallas Morning News wrote:Dena Schlosser's capital murder trial ended in a hung jury Saturday, with one juror firmly against 10 others who had concluded she was not guilty by reason of insanity and one panelist who would not decide.

State District Judge Chris Oldner declared the mistrial about 5:45 p.m., after jurors said for the third time that they were hopelessly deadlocked. Jurors said the man who voted guilty refused to participate in deliberations.

They deliberated more than 40 hours over four days to decide whether Ms. Schlosser was guilty of killing her 10-month-old daughter, Maggie Schlosser. Ms. Schlosser's defense said that she was not guilty because she did not know right from wrong at the time she cut off her daughter's arms with a kitchen knife.

The woman had/has a brain tumor that has effected her mental state. Shouldn't that be a consideration when placing her for the remainder of her life?

Not denying what she did was horrid...but we aren't talking a cold blooded, planned murder for personal gain. (Such as what Susan Smith did when drowing her boys so she could run away with a boyfriend.)

UM.... :o ....WOW!.... :o

People are friggin nuts!

My opinion....you don't want the baby? Give it to someone who does (don't kill them)......You don't want to be married? Leave the person (don't kill them).....WTF???

OH YEAH....AND....if you don't want your pet anymore..DON'T just set it loose in a park or woods or something! And don't abuse it! Find it a home!
that is all...

Yeah, I'm somewhat sympathetic to the mom. She's unwell. :-?

Just until the last few years, things like PPD haven't been taken very seriously, and it IS serious, but not criminal.

situations like this are so sad. I believe the woman was truly sick and while it makes me ill I feel pity for the mother as well. Somebody missed the boat here by not seeing she shouldn't have those kids with her. And like the other mothers who have done things like this, when she gets help and if she gets well she will go crazy realizing what she's done.
