A directory of cell phone numbers will be published soon. This opens the
door to solicitors calling our cell phones and using up our minutes. The
Federal Trade Commission has set up a do not call list. You must call
1-888-382-1222 to register and protect your cell phone number from
unsolicited calls or you can click on the link below to register up to
three cell phones on line.
Looks like you have to choose to have your number available...
Here's what we know so far. First of all, your cell phone number is not going to be given out to just anyone. Secondly, it won't be published in a traditional phone book. Most importantly, directory assistance will only have your cell phone number if you request it.
The state attorney general's office says cell users shouldn't be concerned at this point, since it's an "opt in" system.
“If someone wishes to put their number on a directory for 411 service meaning other people can access their number if they're trying to find out where they are or what their number is, then they can do that. But you have the sole right to decide if you want to do that or not,” said Staci Schneider, attorney general spokesperson.
People who are still concerned can register their cell numbers on the national Do Not Call list. Even though they're protected now, some people worry numbers could get in the wrong hands.
“There's going to be slip-ups here and there and you never know what's going to happen and you number might end up in some online website or some book so you really can't control unless you start having people call you,” said Nemoy Rau.
Some people believe phone companies are pushing for the directory in an effort to drive up prime time minutes and make more money.
The attorney generals office reminds consumers many e-mails being circulated regarding a cell directory are untrue. Your cell number won't be listed without your permission.
This has been in the news off and on since the spring. The last I heard anything other than this link, some cell phone companies were not going to even participate. You need to check your service contract.
Well...(said in my best Bubba voice) I've been on sabbatical.
I saw the title of this thread and I thought it was going to be a rip job on all those a-holes who have their phones surgically attached to their ears.
I get maybe one every three or four months and it's generally from a charity that I have given to in the past. I signed up on the national do not call list when it first became available and it's WONDERFUL!

I did too-I since you could register 3 numbers, why not? I also registered the number for my phone/fax machine-for a while I still got the fax solicitations and could not find out if the DO NOT CALL registry applied to fax machines, but they have stopped, at least for now.

actually, the registry may apply to fax machines-I just could not get an answer to that question anywhere. Since the solicitaitons have stopped, maybe it did work!
Actually, there won't be any published phone book for cell phone numbers. The new list is just for those that want people to be able to find their number if they call directory assistance.
According to the wireless providers that are in favor of the directory assistance for mobile phone nimbers, they will ask permission before (or an opt out optin) prior to releasing your wireless number. So I would advise to check with your provider to either opt in or opt out.
