I agree that Jimmy could release nearly any of the songs on LTC (except maybe Simply Complicated

), but when I think back on his previous albums, especially his older stuff, some of his best material was never "released" as a single. I love being able to sing along with Bubba to the tunes that weren't necessarily his "songs you know by heart."
For the record, though, I'd LOVE to see Coast of Carolina and/or Coastal Confessions released!

Well the short version of this answer is that there are 2 different things here - appearing on an album and appearing on the radio.
It all goes back to radio, which is what the labels live and die by. Radio sells the CD's. You give the radio 2 Toby Keith singles to play, and they're going to have to pick. Playlists are so tight, most terrestrial radio stations won't play both - they only have 15-20 currents to play. Dreamworks isn't going to want RCA putting out a TK single to radio when they're trying to get Toby and Krystal up the charts. If you'll notice, RCA released "Trip" between Martina singles... as How Far was peaking, and now that Trip has about maxed out they are working God's Will.
I don't know how the money changes hands exactly, but it's a big nightmare when artists of different record labels try to record together. Ask Garth Brooks & Trisha Yearwood!

Thanks for clarifying what I was trying to say back a few pages. I found it very interesting that they would pickt he Toby single with Mockingbird just now starting out on the charts.

I've got a couple of questions for someone in the know.
1. If this is such a big deal, how were they able to release HGL when they did? Did none of the other artists have a single out then, or was that just different because it was all of them combined?
2. Are they recording a brand new version with just Jimmy singing, or are they using his vocals that were recorded last December but scratched in favor of Toby's?
Thanks for any insight.

HGL was released in May:
Clint Black had a song that came out the month before and the month after HGL was released, but he hasnt' seen any chart action in a while.
Alan Jackson's single before that was "Remember When" which was released in October.
George Strait's "I Hate Everything" came out the month after HGL was released.
Kenny Chesney's "I Go Back" had been out on the street for a month, and he didnt' release another single until August.
Toby Keith's single "American Soldier" came out in November and "Stays in Mexico" hit the street in August.

Wow - talk about good timing. What are the odds of that?
Thanks!

I think all the single releases are laid out months in advance. And it helped that Jackson, Strait, and Keith were in between albums at that time, too.

Four Play,
I talked to Will Kimbrough at a show on 12/10. Will told me that Bubba is going back into the studio to re-record the song. He said that the Toby Keith vocals will be dropped from the song.

That's interesting. I wonder why that is...
I LOVE that song. I could really care less if Toby Kieth is on it. I like how he performs it with Mac.

I was referring to the shame being Toby being dropped... said in a dry, acerbic monotone.

Interesting game they play with radio; amazing timing for HGL given their rules. (Re. POW and Toby, if Mockingbird is the best they can do, I'll go back to CDs for a while.) Anyway, since that wall wouldn't come down, good for Jimmy for finding some way to get around it and get POW out there as a single; it's a great song. Hopefully POW will get some airplay and radio won't walk away just because Jimmy's solo and not with one of their "hot" singles artists. This will be an interesting test of Jimmy's radio marketability and RCAs radio influence.
Don't get me wrong, I think LTC is a great album -- beyond his musicianship, Jimmy was able to build and leverage relationships to masterfully orchestrate collaborations beyond what anyone else could likely do. (Isn't Willie the only one that turned him down? Your loss, Willie.) Kudos to Jimmy -- well deserved and earned for his LTC success, but I'm still skeptical that he has truly been embraced as a solo artist by the Nashville status quo. Jimmy's clearly been enjoying his recent recognition and success but seems savy and wise enough not to bank on having evolved into a big singles artist. If nothing else, I can't recall who else has created their own music genre, been a top concert draw and successful author, and... by the way, in 20 years, I wonder how successful Toby's big new Las Vegas restaurant will be??
One thing I just can't figure out though...what's Jimmy gonna do with the POW verse he always has someone else sing?...
"I'm a dreadful sight and I just don't care
Spent all morning pulling out my hair
I woke at dawn with a crazy spin
Half the day trying to glue back in"

I imagine Jimmy will sing the whole song himself. Will Kimbrough does the original himself and it is great.

Mac sings it when they do it live! And does a fine job of it I might say!
<--------starting to get a crush on Mac.

That's what I mean... Jimmy never sings that part himself! (Hard to pull out what's already gone missing....)

Thanks for the add'l info re. Allison Krauss. I'm still not sure anyone else could have pulled off what Jimmy did for LTC.
By the way, how the heck do I get this thing to quote an individual's post or a series of posts vs. just saying "quote"??? Haven't figured that out yet....

"If" Jimmy releases POW without Toby on it I can already hear the country deejays saying that there must be a problem between Jimmy and Toby

Well I still go back to my original theory that it sucks to hear one version on the radio and not be able to buy that version. Isn't it all about selling albums? And again, I'd point out that there are great solo songs on LTC.
This aggrevates me. I'm going to ask the label for comment, see if they'll give me anything.
