Now I'm curious how it all works. I know it changes from time to time, but where is it streaming from and where is it recorded? Seems like Steve is working all the time.Key Lime Lee wrote:Are you curious about where the shows are physically recorded or where it streams from?
Sometimes I have a picture in my mind of Steve sitting up all night like "Are You Out There" in Dar's song.
"Calling Olson, Calling Memphis
I am calling, can you hear this?
I was out here listening all the time
And I will write this down
and then I will not be alone again yeah
I was out here listening
Oh yeah I was out here listening
Oh yeah I am out here listening all the time." ~~Dar Williams

Will someone explain the technical side of live streaming? When the concert is live, I assume someone at the concert site dials up and send the audio feed to Steve who controls the stopping and starting of it to some extent. How is the audio sent...in what kind of file?Ilph wrote:As for Steve being on all the time, I'm pretty sure that he voicetracks (or pre-records) a lot of the stuff and then it is plugged into the computer and it runs with the songs. A lot of radio stations do this.
How does all that work? I read a little about how to put streaming audio/video on your web site. Is that basically what Steve does and then we just sign on to the web site (or is it to a server) and capture the feed with whichever player we choose? And how?
How massive a server is there to handle that much bandwidth? Or is that even the way it works?
In this case, "questions are the easy part."
Wonder if Radiomargaritaville is the most listened to radio station on the net? Doesn't it cost Jimmy a lot to provide the station?

Yeah, thats pretty much how its done, I think....
The signal(s) go to a streaming server from the source location (could be concert, venue, or studio), and then it is 'posted' to the web... when you log in, it creates the stream to you from that streaming server...
I know that bandwidth has gotten a lot cheaper over the years, but technically, Jimmy (or someone) pays for every stream to every listener... more listeners=more bandwidth... maybe thats why the 'top' stream is only 40K or so... maybe they could offer a 'paid' stream to people if they got to go to higher quality sound...
not sure if RM is #1 or not, would be neat to see where it ranks...
