Spit or Swallow?

It's not what you think it is! :o I took my wife this weekend to 2 of the local wineries that had holiday open houses this weekend and they had cheese, bread and other stuff. Also they were giving away a lot of samples of the wines. I am not a wine drinker so I guess this is where my question comes from. I noticed that some people and the wine experts there would take the sample swish it around and then spit it back in the glass and then dump it while some of the others just drank it. What is up with that? Call me low class but if booze is in a glass or a cup I am going to drink it.

I knew it would go downhill but I wanted to see how far we could get on this one before it got really bad. I was wondering this because I talked to a buddy of mine last night and he said that you should do that when sampling any kind of booze so that the tastes can be washed away with water and you won't mix the different flavors.

Some wine snobs do the whole spitting thing if they plan on tasting a lot of wines and remember doing so. Me? I think it is abuse. Oh the stories I could tell from my days as a wine salesman.......

Don't put it in your mouth unless you are going to swallow.

That is what the bread is for. I bet all the cheese was white as well. Havarti and such. Am I correct?

I guess the decision to spit or swallow the wine would be directly related to taste. If I don't like the taste, I'm not going to swallow it...but if the taste is pleasing, I would want to savor it a bit.

I once had a wine snob tell me that you must spit when tasting because "there are no taste buds in your throat" To which I replied. "you drink this for the taste?"

They had mostly white but they did have some others that wasn't. I went mainly for the cookies.

That was the whole thing that kind of freaked me out when I saw it. That has been what I always did. If I didn't like it I would spit it out or be polite and choke it down.

I will drink maybe a half of a glass of wine with dinner if we are at a nice restaurant. If not I go for the finer things like beer, tequila, bouron and rum.
