I haven't . . . but I'm always looking for serials. I like to watch the characters (and author) grow !!!conched wrote:Here is another group of books that looks intriguing!
Lisa Wingate wrote "Tending Roses" that I saw a comment about under the Ben Erickson --A Parting Gift reviews.

Has anyone ever read any of these books?

Are you liking him? I grew to really admire him as I read. He must be close to my age because he uses so many references from MY era.conched wrote:I just ordered Night Fall also...as if I need another book on the TO READ shelf.
I loved the part in Blue Lonesome where JIM decided to get out on the edge after reminiscing about an Astros/Giants baseball game!
So much to read and a concert tour leg starting SOON!

I finished Blue Lonesome this morning. I did enjoy the writing. Turned into a heavy situation, but it made me think that many times we should stick our necks out some and quit being ostriches when it is really important.East Texas Parrothead wrote:Are you liking him? I think the author even used a quote about birds and mentioned ostriches.
I enjoyed the age of Jim and Dacy ...mid thirties. While being cynical after losing at love...WELL, it is a love story about lonesome characters. Have you ever read such vivid descriptions of loneliness?
For some reason I always think of mid 30's as being very young and they both seemed so much older.
I also enjoyed Pronzini's description of eyes and the feelings in peoples' eyes. Yes, ETP, he must be in his 50's. Wonder if he actually experienced any of the plot or if he is just a great crime writer. The book seemed to be more about reaching out from loneliness and the crime mystery was used to write about it. I loved Pronzini's love of JAZZ music and his descriptions of the sounds and instruments. His writing makes me wonder more about him! I can't believe I've never run across him since he is so prolific in the crime writing world.
I noticed I used the word description several times and Pronzini wrote in a way that you could almost sense the people, the settings, sounds!

And more about him and his wife. I see they wrote a book together called Lighthouse and I guess we discussed that somewhere here.

conched: That's what touched me, too. The lonliness was palable. But never in a pathetic way.
Loved the jazz references.
I wonder if I were put in the same circumstances, would I find that kind of compassion and courage to set matters right.
I'm going to check out the links. Thanks for finding them. I didn't know much about him before BLUE LONESOME.
I finished Larry Brooks' BAIT AND SWITCH last night. A little slow starting, and glib to the point of rolling your eyes sometimes, but the ending was PACKED WITH SURPRISES. Never saw it coming. . .not the VERY end.
And the VERY end happens in KEY WEST.
I'll post my review and Brooks has agreed to sit for an interview.
I liked the main character and can almost see it being made into a feature film.
Enjoy!

This is one series that truly IS best read in order. Kinsey has really "grown" and I think reading them out of order would be okay, but I don't think you'd have the same kind of continuity/relationship with her as you do when read in order.jeepgirl wrote:PHAW Webmistress wrote:I went to the bookstore specifically to pick up Blue Lonesome and A Parting Gift - BOTH were out of stockbut they're due in next week. Gotta start on A PARTING GIFT.
The LBJ/MLK book (I'm reading during lunch hours) is A*mazing. I'm so not a non-fiction reader, but this is very well done (the guy has a Pulitzer, after all).
I did not realize that the Black Mississippi delegates to the 1964 Democratic convention did not get to vote. I'm just on the part where LBJ strikes a deal that they can vote in 1968, but not 1964. I didn't get involved in politics until college. . . and I was only 12 in 1964, but it's sooo amazing to me what those people went through to even GET to the 1964 convention in Atlantic City.
Talk about courage.

I went to Amazon to read the reviews for BAIT and SWITCH.
Quote:
BAIT AND SWITCH is definitely a novel that both men and women will love, but a warning to the guys out there. Like Larry Brooks' first novel, DARKNESS BOUND, this book is also a learning manual for women on how to control and manipulate the men in their lives. The male population won't have a chance after the ladies read this!! Read BAIT AND SWITCH, and then you'll see that the war between the sexes has never been so deadly and so delicious.
Goody, lessons on manipulation!!
