ASHEVILLE - Legendary singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett will play a surprise show in Asheville next Tuesday, Jan. 11, at his new Cheeseburger in Paradise restaurant, organizers said Monday. All proceeds will benefit the Eblen Foundation, which last week quietly sold 260 tickets - each priced at $250.
Only a handful of tickets remain and will be available to the public through a lottery, but details have not yet been worked out, said Eblen events coordinator Susan Riddle.
"It's an awesome thing," she said. "We got word about this last week and started calling folks who had been tremendous foundation supporters and that is all it took.''
At $250 each, the Buffett tickets are among the most expensive ever sold for a local concert. But the price didn't faze Gail Weams, president of the Western North Carolina Parrot Head Club, a group of loyal fans who also perform volunteer community services. She grabbed two tickets the instant they were offered.
"We've traveled from Key West to New York to Chicago to see him," said Weams, whose husband Steve Weams leads the local Caribbean Cowboys band, which covers many Buffett songs.
"I was thrilled. We normally see him in venues that seat 24,0o0 people. "
As for the cost, "it all goes to charity," Weams said. "That is what true Parrot Heads are about. They say we party with a purpose and that is true."
The Tuesday benefit will feature Johnny Russler and the Beach Bum Band. It is uncertain if Buffett will join them, or play solo, or both, Weams said.
Buffett, whose biggest hits include "Cheeseburger in Paradise," "Come Monday," "Margaritaville" and "Son of A Son of a Sailor," has found strong fame with country fans in the past year. His duet with Alan Jackson, "It's Five O'Clock Somewhere" raced up the country charts in 2003, and earned Buffett his first Grammy last February. Last July, Buffett's new studio album "License to Chill," made its debut in first place on the Billboard charts. Currently, his music video "Trip Around the Sun," a duet with Martina McBride, is getting heavy airplay on Country Music Television.
The Cheeseburger in Paradise restaurant chain is a partnership between Buffett and Outback Steakhouse Inc. The Asheville location is at 1 Restaurant Court, a new development just off Tunnel Road near Kenilworth Knoll Road, behind the Red Lobster. Cheeseburger in Paradise will open on Monday with a menu featuring American and island food, beach bar items including shrimp fritters, and a signature cheeseburger.
