I read with interest your recent comments on the state of country music business. I listen to country music daily and have for many years.
It started last year when Buffett teamed up with Alan Jackson singing "It's 5-o-clock Somewhere."
Actually it started long before that, Buffett was in Nashville before you were writing for the Free Times. In the research for your article, I'm sure that you came across Jimmy's albums from the early 70's. You seem to have overlooked an early Buffett / Jackson collaboration, 1999's Margaritaville duet on Jackson's album Under the Influence.
I hope you took the opportunity to see Clint Black tour with Buffett in 2000, it was a real treat.
I find it amazing that it took you until the end of December to have an opinion about Buffett or his music. The CD was released in the spring. Your publication listed a Buffett concert in the "annual guide to just about everything worth bothering with from now until Labor Day." http://www.freetimes.com/print.php?sid=1478. Jeff Niesel felt the need to mention "Jimmy Buffett's written a song about him" in a piece about Bill Wharton http://www.freetimes.com/modules.php?op ... e&sid=2238.
Parrotheads have been disappointed for years because Clear Channel stations didn't play much Jimmy Buffett music. We dealt with it by changing the station.
Try it, you might find a station with a playlist more to your liking.

I'm glad your happy that beach music is all we get to listen to in this, the poorest city in the country. And we have a beach -- one of the most toxic bodies of water in the country, unless you like Mercury, so maybe we should just all grab a corona and celebrate.
You know, I'm pretty sure that Clint Black and Jimmy weren't all over the air waves in 2000 and I'm pretty sure it wasn't until Alan Jackson got together with him last year that we started hearing him all over the radio. I would have loved to hear Clint Black or even Jimmy and his old stuff back on the radio, but it'll never happen. The corporation owned airwaves are force feeding us the blandest songs they can, unless it's Toby Keith and pro war ... Note, the only reason Willie Nelson made it on the air last year was because he did his "round up the Taliban" pro war song with Toby Keith. The only reason the Dixie Chicks faded off the air is because they disagree ... and now your beloved Jimmy is out there on the center stage getting plenty of play and I think the same bosses are in control. A station with a playlist to my liking? We've got 13 Clearchannel radio stations in this town -- I love it, you parrotheads have been emailing me all morning that I need to change the radio station. No, I'm sorry but the airwaves are owned by the public, just because the corporations have stolen them doesn't make it right, and I'm sorry your Buffett is being used. But I believe he is. I know he's not all about the beach comer and that he has more to offer ordinary folks, but all were getting is distraction and the country's in trouble.
Anyway, sorry to rant. I appreciate your note and your time.
Joshua

Man this is no phun.
He doesnt argue back, and he compliments me in of all paces the place I like it most.
He must know I want to be a writer.
Anywho, here goes!

Truly I don't mind Buffett my young friend. You're right, he's got some good stuff. But the country is at war, this is the poorest city in the nation, we just laid off 1000 teaches and 200 cops ... this is not the time for beach music. I believe, and I may be wrong, that the corporations that own the radio stations are tied to the same ones that are making money in the war. I believe, that what they play is what becomes popular, and I believe they're using force feeding us lullabies when there is some really good hard core country music out there -- stuff that speaks to our hearts and unites us in our sorrows. Sure, there is a time to party, but boy, this country is in trouble, it's hardly the time for a beach trip.
Matt, you're a good writer, keep it up.
Sincerely,
Joshua Greene"

These comments make it even more clearer to me that Chesney is a Buffett ripoff. Sounds like the lyrics to "Makin' Music For Money". Kenny didn't help launch the clones, he is a clone. If it weren't for Buffett, there would be no Chesney.People your so obsessed with "history" look it up!!!! Kenny's music was changing a long time before the term "Island country" was coined. He moved that way because he was sick of Country Execs telling him who he should be and what he should sing. He followed his influences and his own experiences and now his success, along with Jimmys second coming has launched the "clones" it happens in everygenre of music.

One thing Jimmy Buffett has always stood by is that he can't be labled. Having said that, the advantage to being associated with country is that you can be over 30 years old and have a chance to be played on the air somewhere. There is no hope at all for a new rocker over that age of making it today in mainstream music. None, Zero, Nada, Jimmy realized this years ago. It is also much easier to write for a country audience.
I do. I enjoy his smile almost as much as Jimmy's. I like the songs and the selling escape to the beach. Now, I have to catch up with page 3 and 4 here. You guys have been busy!cowboyjunkie wrote:Well said. Still miss the likes of Townes Van Zandt....Gumbo wrote:I'm an unabashed Parrothead, but I understand this guy's point. Problem is he's making his point over a decade after country music was ruined. The Garth Brooks of the world destroyed the country music this guy loved. I'm a big Haggard, Willie, Cash, Waylon, Kristopherson, Outlaw country music fan. I enjoy Don Williams and Hank Sr/Jr. This was good country music. Then all of the sudden in the early 90's pop had a terrible influence on good country music. I can't tolerate most of the stuff I hear today...including Toby Keith, Big and Rich, Dixie Chicks, Shania Twain, Tim McGraw, etc. etc. Don't get me wrong, there are a few left out there that try to carry on the tradition, incuding George Strait and Alan Jackson, but most of these acts are pop bands with country accents. Its annoying.
.
Does anybody actually like Kenny Chesney? I've heard some songs and they are awful. I cringed when I heard about LTC since country music has become so packaged. The results were not nearly as bad as I expected but nowhere close to the Before the Beach type material. Can't blame Jimmy though since the Alan Jackson duet opened up a new market much like "Touch Of Grey" brought the Grateful Dead to MTV. Why not take the money and run!
I have decided if Jimmy stops the big show, I am going to see Kenny every chance I get. Just my quest in staying young. Ya know, ya gotta "dance like nobody's watchin!"
i agree
This guy is a butt hole i agree with everything said
