I haven't gotten a response yet, but in those posted, I don't get it... Joshua wants songs saying "life sucks, I have no job, and we're all doomed?" Ya, like that will happen!
I prefer music to take me away from those thoughts, and well, escape!

You’re still grinning, we’re still winning, nothing left to say
I’m still gliding as I go flying down this endless wave

Joshua sounds seriously depressed and is letting the troubles of the world get him down. We could all do that!
I think he needs to practice some espace. It's good you guys emailed and gave him some credit!
(Congrats to Matt and Elrod on solid emails.)
It's time for Mr. Greene to start listening with a new ear and let go a little. Maybe he needs to make a move/change! (Then, maybe again, he's just not looking in the right place where he is!!!) I have to turn off CMT at times too. Heck, I have to turn off CNN quite a bit! (Mind you, I'm not forgetting anything going on in the world and PRAY daily for more peace and understanding.)
Parrotheads always seem genuinely happy above all else!!! Ya think it's because we have learned to smile through all those changes in latitude and changes in attitude!!? Jimmy has provided us with so many motivational Buffettisms to think about. Even his songs like Captain and the Kid/False Echoes make us feel and shed a few good tears.

OK here is his reply to mine:
You know, I like his Railroad Lady stuff, but that kind of stuff will
never gonna make it on the radio today. You honestly think it's the
country music that he played so long ago that he's bringing to the airwaves today. Wrongo sailor. It's the beach comber version. Mainstream radio is controlled by the corporations -- it's in their interest to lull us to sleep with their sanitized sterile sounds.
This country is struggling
yo, you think differently you're just part of the problem. I was raised
on country music, a strong hard, defiant, sound that has nothing to do
with passivity or simply letting the greedy corporate hustlers get away
with pimping out a whole genre of music. And I do turn my radio off
when it comes to Toby Keith singing about how triumphant we are in war and I do turn it off when Kenny Chesney who had a chance to be the next
Mellancamp, starts singing Buffett beach songs. I'm surprised that you, a
PH, is okay with Buffett being used. As popular as he is, he never made
it on the radio when he had something to say. Sure, spring break beach
music and there he is.
Don't you find it at least interesting that the Dixie Chicks were
pretty much eliminated from the airwaves after making a squeek against Bush; that the only time Willie Nelson made it on Clear Channel radio in the last decade was when he sang a Toby Keith duo about rallying the troops for war; and that Buffett's beach music is now the industry standard. Keep insulting me, you're proving your point.

But the country is at war, this is the poorest city in the nation, we just laid off 1000 teaches and 200 cops ... this is not the time for beach music.
And why not? What is wrong with a little escapism?Sure, there is a time to party, but boy, this country is in trouble, it's hardly the time for a beach trip.

I can see Joshua's point but I don't think he is correct in JB being used by the industry. There is no doubt that Clear Channel acted against the Dixie Chicks for speaking the truth. There is no doubt that Clear Channel stands to profit when they support the White House. How else can you explain the embarrassingly offensive (and ignorant) lyrics of an artist like Toby Keith? In a country suddenly divided after 9/11, swinging the vote to 51/49 has greatly impacted our future. It remains in the best interest of Big Business to promote "authorized" music and film that protects the slight ideological edge the Bush Empire holds. Can you imagine if Clear Channel suddenly played Steve Earle and Ani Difranco? Dick Cheney would roll over in his grave!
My first Buffett show was a politcal fundraiser for Lawton Chiles in the early 1990's when I was still in high school. There was a strange vibe to the event at the Sunrise Musical Theater. All of the lower level seats were dressed formal and the upper level looked served as lawn seats. Ever since, I've been a huge fan of Jimmy's music and how he always pulls for the underdogs. He may be getting tons of Clear Channel and CMT airplay but there is a certain, subversive nature to the success. Rather than being used, I think Jimmy is sitting back on a beach in Maui laughing about how he pulled one over on the record industry that misplaced him for the last 30 years.

Clear Channel may have stonewalled the Dixie Chicks after their anti-Bush statements, but to be fair, they were on their way out of Nashville anyway. Anyone who has ever worked with the Dixie Chicks were completely repulsed. The majority of people in the Nashville music industry (artists, label workers, radio personnel) are friendly. The Dixie Chicks were notorious for their diva attitudes and generally acting like all around b*tches.mikess wrote:OK here is his reply to mine:

Nashville secretly loves those people that speak out. Anyone there will tell you how much they love people like Willie Nelson or Johnny Cash, who continually bucked the system. The country music industry was ready to welcome the Dixie Chicks back into the fold until the VH1 Awards rolled around, where Natalie Maines made it very clear what her feelings towards the country music industry was. After that, they were done. "Home" was one of the best albums of the year in 2002, and here we are three years later, and haven't heard any new material from them. The Dixie Chicks cut their own throat, that wasn't country music's fault.
Sorry, I was a little long winded there.

The radio industry as a whole is big business and it's business as usual. And I love Jimmy Buffett and his music, but Buffett is a businessman. I don't think Buffett is being used by the industry, but I think the country music industry and Jimmy Buffett are definately cashing in off of each other. Will Jimmy be on the radio in a year? I would love to say yes, but I really doubt it. That's just the nature of the beast. And I would guess that Jimmy is okay with that.cowboyjunkie wrote:I can see Joshua's point but I don't think he is correct in JB being used by the industry. An artist might not be able to do the touring or recording, but they can still do publicity. You still saw Marina McBride and Sara Evans during and after their pregnancies. The Dixie Chicks have completely disappeared from the country music landscape.Tiki Bar wrote:I just figured it was 'cuz they're all busy having babies.Ilph wrote:"Home" was one of the best albums of the year in 2002, and here we are three years later, and haven't heard any new material from them. only when he comes over, day after day, asking to borrow the lawnmower and the chainsaw. If I've told him once, I've told him a hundred times: NO. Not until I get to ride right seat in the Dancer, just once. But still, he keeps showing up on my doorstep bugging me.ragtopW wrote:well he is right..... Jimmy is an escapest!!!!!![]()

Well, he could just forego mainstream radio completely and just tune in RM...Elrod wrote:Joshua wrote:You know I'd like Clearchannel a bit more if they'd play some Railroad Lady Buffett music instead of the beach stuff. I appreciate your note though. I'm glad your happy that beach music is all we get to listen to in this, the poorest city in the country. And we have a beach -- one of the most toxic bodies of water in the country, unless you like Mercury, so maybe we should just all grab a corona and celebrate.
You know, I'm pretty sure that Clint Black and Jimmy weren't all over the air waves in 2000 and I'm pretty sure it wasn't until Alan Jackson got together with him last year that we started hearing him all over the radio. I would have loved to hear Clint Black or even Jimmy and his old stuff back on the radio, but it'll never happen. The corporation owned airwaves are force feeding us the blandest songs they can, unless it's Toby Keith and pro war ... Note, the only reason Willie Nelson made it on the air last year was because he did his "round up the Taliban" pro war song with Toby Keith. The only reason the Dixie Chicks faded off the air is because they disagree ... and now your beloved Jimmy is out there on the center stage getting plenty of play and I think the same bosses are in control. A station with a playlist to my liking? We've got 13 Clearchannel radio stations in this town -- I love it, you parrotheads have been emailing me all morning that I need to change the radio station. No, I'm sorry but the airwaves are owned by the public, just because the corporations have stolen them doesn't make it right, and I'm sorry your Buffett is being used. But I believe he is. I know he's not all about the beach comer and that he has more to offer ordinary folks, but all were getting is distraction and the country's in trouble.
Anyway, sorry to rant. I appreciate your note and your time.
