Speaking of kangaroos...

... I need info on Australia. (you may have seen this posted in Ermie's BNer of the Day thread a while back.)
February 22nd is World Thinking Day for Girl Scouts and Girl Guides worldwide, with the theme being food. To celebrate, in our service unit, each Troop has to pick a country and set up a 6' display for a World's Fair, and my 1st Graders picked Australia. Among other things, they recommend trying to serve a small sample of native food to visitors of your booth - potentially 500 girls!!
Our biggest hinderance is a low budget... we are 1st year Brownies, and money from January cookie sales won't be in hand until April, so virtually everything will be out of pocket. Any ideas for Aussie Tucker?
Simple, and not too messy would be preferred. I'd order TimTams, but I'd need a bunch of them, and they're not cheap. What about Vegemite? It sounds icky - do kids really like it? And what about recipes?
I've seen Anzac biscuits, coconut ice, and chocolate crackles... what is dessicated coconut, and what is copha? Do you sit on it?

sorry! Honeycomb... what is bi-carb soda?
Thanks!

Well vegimite is cheap. But nobody with functioning taste buds will like it.

Never, I repeat NEVER eat Vegemite unless you have to. Vegemite is made from yeast extract. That doesn't even sound inviting.
TimTams are only $3.50 for a pack of 20 (I think). One "biscuit" per person would be about $125 plus shipping. What type of budget are you working with?
They produce a lot of tea. Or if you want to go really cheap, just bring in packets of cane sugar.

Then of course there is Milo, yummy Milo.
Creeky, I'm on the next flight down!

Thanks guys! I thought it was just me! Wasn't there an episode of I Love Lucy with vitavegimite? Is it the same stuff?
I didn't realize there were 20 per TimTam... it just looked like it served 1! As for budget, there are only 5 girls... I doubt their parents would want to spend any more than $5-$10 each, so $50 if we're lucky.
I noticed a lot of the recipes are just sugar combined with sugar syrup, or whatever they call it!

What is Milo?

Same as anyone with functioning taste buds would not eat peanut butter and jelly (jam) on the same thing

True, Peanut butter and Pickles is a much better combo.

What is Milo?
Golden Syrup is made from sugar cane ...... dont think you can get it in the USA
Lamingtons are a "national traditional cake" - relatively easy to make - you should be able to find recipes online easy enough.
Milo is a powder energy drink.
www.about-australia.com is in San Antonio and stocks golden syrup.

I was hoping to hear Australians really love Cheerio's or the like!

Couple boxes, 1 Cheerio per kid - done!
I've seen some Lamingtons recipes - maybe some of the other moms are more adept in the kitchen then me!

Anzac biscuits are REALLY easy to make if you can snag some golden syrup and they would not cost a lot to make.
We are a "multi cultural" country and eat foods from many different worlds .... how about all kids love going to McDonalds

Still wondering, what is: castor sugar? bi-carb soda? dessicated coconut? (this is in a ton of recipes)

Castor sugar is "fine sugar" - smaller than normal sugar.(I always use normal white sugar tho)
Bi-carb - gotta think on what that is ..... if a recipe asks for it - can usually miss it - I have in the past!
Dessicated coconut is not shredded cocount, but is a finer coconut .....

But they have to call it Mac-ahs or wrap up some Burger King food and call it "Hungry Jacks".
I usually stick with
www.australian-food.com or for cheaper TimTams
www.simplyoz.com. SimplyOz is out of WA and you can get Golden Syrup from them.
Golden Syrup is similar to maple syrup; except its made from cane sugar instead of maple sugar.
Milo is similar to Ovaltene, but tastes better.

Thanks J! Have simplyoz, aboutaustralia, and aussiecatalog bookmarked.
Hmmm... wonder if they'd frown upon Milo served in shot glasses... from a walking Tiki Bar! Fosters for the adults!
