Freak Flag Fly

Can anybody tell me the origin of this expression? I know it's in the song "Almost Cut My Hair" by David Crosby. I also think but have not found it is in the lyrics of If 6 Was 9 by Jimi Hendrix. There may be an "Easy Rider" link too.

Jahfin, somebody- help. :-) Won't let mine fly till I find out for sure.

But that's common vernacular for payday...

I thought that, I just wondered about the root or the beginning...

If 6 Was 9 Lyrics
by Jimi Hendrix

Yeah, sing the song, Bro'

If the sun refuse to shine,
I don't mind, I don't mind,
If the mountains fell in the sea,
let it be, it ain't me.
Alright, 'cos I got my own world to look through,
And I ain't gonna copy you.

Now if 6 turned out to be 9,
I don't mind, I don't mind,
Alright, if all the hippies cut off all their hair,
I don't care, I don't care.
Dig, 'cos I got my own world to live through
And I ain't gonna copy you.

White collared conservative flashing down the street,

Pointing their plastic finger at me.
They're hoping soon my kind will drop and die,
But I'm gonna wave my freak flag high, high.
Wave on, wave on
Fall mountains, just don't fall on me
Go ahead on Mr. Business man, you can't dress like me.
Sing on Brother, play on drummer.

Have you tried "Asking Jeeves?"

"I'm gonna wave my freak flag" ought to mean "I am proud to be a freak" (which means a hippie, a doper, a rebel...)

So if you wave it high, either the flag or the waver is high.
How's that?

I don't think "Jeeves" ever flew it. :-)

I'm really hoping to find there's a literal thing and it's not merely a metaphor.

I also want it's first use and originator. Hendrix puts it in 1967 before Crosby & Easy Rider.

Apparently, according to "Time Squad", it goes back to Betsy Ross!
